Sushma's statement on Pak rattles separatist Mirwaiz | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 21: Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's June 19 New Delhi statement that talks and terror could not go hand-in-hand and that all the issues between India and Pakistan were bilateral and would be tackled bilaterally has rattled Kashmiri separatists like the self-styled chairman of APHC-M, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq. Sushma on Sunday had said Pakistan had not refused to allow an NIA team to visit that country to probe the Pathankot airbase attack case and just sought "more time" and declared that talks and terror couldn't go hand-in-hand. She had further said: "The warmth and ease in relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif can help resolve complex issues between the two neighbours. India wants to resolve all vexed issues with Pakistan through talks…The Government was pursuing a three-point formula to deal with Islamabad the focus of which is that talks cannot go on if Pakistan does not take action to contain terror. First, we want to solve every issue thorough talks. Second, talks will be between India and Pakistan and no third country or party will be its part. Third, terror and talks will not go hand-in-hand". What she said was absolutely right when she without mincing words said talks and terror couldn't go hand-in-hand and that New Delhi will not allow any third country or party to interfere in the bilateral issues between India and Pakistan. It was obvious that her statement would upset many in Kashmir and it actually happened. Reacting to her statement, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday said no breakthrough was possible in India-Pakistan relations without involving Kashmiris in the dialogue process for the resolution of Kashmir issue. "The Hurriyat Conference and people of Kashmir have always stood for better relations between New Delhi and Islamabad and the settlement of all the pending issues between them through dialogue. However, regarding Kashmir issue, no breakthrough is expected without the involvement of Kashmiris as it involves their political future and aspirations," he said, and added that the leadership of both the countries would recognize the reality and evolve proper mechanism to include the people of Kashmir and the separatist leadership in any ensuing dialogue process over Kashmir. Just note his nasty statement "no breakthrough is possible in India-Pakistan relations without involving Kashmiris in the dialogue process for the resolution of Kashmir issue" to understand his approach towards the people of Jammu and Ladakh, who occupy over 88 per cent of the state's land area and constitute almost half of the state's population. The seditionist sought to create an impression that Kashmir meant the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and Kashmiri Muslims (read Kashmiri-speaking ethnic Sunnis, who constitute only 22 per cent of the state's population) represent the general will of the people of the state, which is not the case. Kashmiri separatists have no support-base either in Jammu or in Ladakh, where the people are vehemently opposed to demands in Kashmir ranging from independence to merger with Pakistan to self-rule to autonomy. Even the Sunni leaders of Kashmir are not one as far as their stand on J&K is concerned. They are vertically divided into four groups. And, what about the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus? They are ethnically Kashmiri ad they are also the original inhabitants of Kashmir. Everyone in the country and in the state knows that they have been fighting for a separate homeland in the Valley. The truth is that Mirwaiz & Co represents only a minority view. It is a different story that he, like other separatists, is surviving and thriving on the weak policies of New Delhi. Another problem is that the so-called Jammu leadership has all along behaved irresponsibly and never put things in perspective by countering the ongoing misinformation campaign in the Valley. It is hoped New Delhi will stick to its stand, adopt a holistic approach towards the issues facing different people inhabiting different regions of the state, as also the issues facing the Hindu refugees in Jammu and reject out of hand the oft-repeated suggestion that Pakistan and Kashmir are also stakeholders in J&K. Indian nation is the only stakeholder in J&K. |
