Yatri dies at Baltal, Rajnath visits Holy Cave | Amarnath Yatra 2016 | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 2: The Annual Amarnath Yatra,2016, which commenced today witnessed death of a Yatri on first day amid visit of Union Home Minister,Rajnath Singh to Holy cave. Official Sources told Early Times that on first day of Amarnath Yatra one elderly Yatri died at Baltal base camp in Ganderbal District while Proceeding towards Holy Cave. The deceased Yatri according to official sources was later identified as Vinod Kumar (52), son of Chandarlal of Shastri Nagar Delhi. Earlier today over 9,000 pilgrims reached at base camps in Ganderbal and Anantnag Districts of Kashmir to begin this year's Amarnath Yatra. Official sources said that out of 7500 pilgrims who had gathered at the Baltal base camp, 4000 had crossed the Dumail gate to start the 14-kilometre long trek to reach cave Shrine today and remaining 3500 pilgrims also crossed the gate towards the Cave later today. From Anantnag side of Nunwan Base camp, 1600 Yatris had crossed Chandanwari towards the Cave in the morning and Yatra on first day was going smoothly till last reports were received from the areas of Cave. As scheduled union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, who is on a two day visit to the State to review security scenario visited the Holy Cave of Amarnath today and paid obeisance. As per official figures 26 Yatris mostly due to Cardiac arrest and one service provide died last year. Situated in a narrow gorge at the farther end of Lidder Valley, Amarnath cave Shrine stands at 3,888, 46 Km from Pahalgam and 14 Kms from Baltal camps. Official accounts reveal that "though the original pilgrimages subscribes that the yatra be undertaken from Srinagar, the more common practice is to begin journey at Chandanwari, and cover the distance to Amarnathji and back in five days." In Hindu scriptures "Amarnathji is considered to be one of the major Hindu Dhams and Holy cave is the abode of Lord Shiva and guardian of the absolute, Lord Shiva, the destroyer, is enshrined in the form of an ice-lingam in this cave. This lingam is formed naturally, which is believed to wax and wane with the moon." Although the existence of the Holy Cave as per Hindu Historians has been mentioned in the Puranas, the popular story narrated by people about the re-discovery of this Holy Cave is of a shepherd Buta Malik. They believe that "story goes like this, that a saint gave Buta Malik a bag full of Coal. On reaching his home when he opened the bag, to his utter surprise the bag was full of gold coins and this overwhelmed him with joy. He ran to thank the Saint. But the Saint had disappeared. Instead, he found The Holy Cave and the Ice Shiv Lingam there in. He announced this discovery to the Villagers. Then onwards this became a sacred place of Pilgrimage for Hindu people." Official details reveal that last year, from July 02, 2015 to August 31,2015 3,52,771 Yatris visited Holy cave. This year's 48-day long Yatra will end on August 17 which according to Historians of indu faith coincides with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals. |
