PDP-BJP coalition not as simple as previous alliances | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 2 : The state of Jammu and Kashmir is under the rule of a coalition Government. And this coalition is not as simple as it was between the PDP and the Congress or between the National Conference and the Congress. It is a coalition between two parties, the PDP and the BJP, that have different ideologies and political approach. If Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, has described the recent killing of eight CRPF jawans as unIslamic she is being dubbed anti-Muslim for taking a pro-BJP stand. And she is blamed for toeing the BJP line when she made it clear that had the CRPF retaliated many innocent civilians would have been killed. And she appreciates the patience shown by the CRPF jawans even while seeing eight of their colleagues falling dead in the ambush laid down by militants. And when separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani or Molvi Umar Farooq condemn such killings do they toe the BJP line? This question has never been raised possibly because these separatists have not forged any alliance with the BJP. Hence Mehbooba has to perform a balancing act so that she keeps those, on the other side of the fence, in good humour. That could be the reason for her repeated plea for resolving various issues with Pakistan through the process of dialogue. Joining hands with the BJP or forging alliance with the BJP for the formation of a Government is viewed as a sin in Kashmir. And those who treat this alliance as a politically immoral need to know that Mufti Mohd. Sayeed had forged the alliance with the BJP for the sheer purpose of ensuring development through liberal financial assistance from the central Government led by the BJP. And Mehbooba emulated her father because she wanted to fulfill her father's mission and vision. But the power hungry opposition blame the BJP for a sell out to the PDP and the vice versa. Neither the National Conference nor the Congress leaders know it that by forging an alliance with the BJP the PDP may suffer severe erosion in its vote bank in the Kashmir valley and by joining hands with the PDP the BJP is likely to suffer erosion in its vote bank in the region of Jammu. Well victory of Mehbooba Mufti in the by-election in Anantnag Assembly could have been facilitated by split of votes among seven candidates, especially the Congress and the NC. But Mehbooba's win cannot be treated as a sign of political vigour of the PDP because one swallow does not make the summer. Despite the fact that Mehbooba won by a margin of over 12,000 votes. If in the next Assembly elections the PDP and the BJP repeated their 2014 performance it could be the result of political mistakes being committed by the NC, the Congress and the Panthers Party. During the last one year the Congress has ceased to function and the NC banks on Omar Abdullah's Twitters. If there is any opposition leader who is trying to reinvent himself and the Panthers Party it is none other than Harsh Dev Singh who has been berating the coalition Government for not resolving basic problems of people and for its failure to end regional discrimination. |
