'Disturbed' babu contradicts his own orders; Class XI exams on amidst summer break | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 2: Contradicting its own orders about ongoing summer vacations for all schools and colleges of Kashmir province, the government is holding exams for all the students of class 11th despite scorching heat at exam halls, which have no proper cooling arrangements. Officials said this had happened due to "half-baked diktat" of a senior official who is "disturbed" over reports of his "alleged jilted love affair", in news in the corridors of power including the Legislative Assembly. Even as the Education Department announced a 17-day summer break for all schools upto class 12th since July 1, the department continues to undertake board exams for the class 11th students. Given the scorching heat and absence of fans at the exam centers, the students feel uneasy while many of them have fallen ill. "With no proper ventilation or fans in the dingy classrooms, we asked the students to appear in the exams in open but this only aggravated the problem as many of them fainted while some even needed hospitalization," said an examiner at a leading government higher secondary school for girls here. As Ramzan is underway, many of the students happen to be on fast, while alleged inhuman condition of exam centers only worsens the situation. "Our kids are suffering from gastroenteritis which doctors attributed to their appearing in exams in terribly inhuman conditions," complained a delegation of parents. Many of the helpless students and their parents registered their grievances at the press enclave here terming the Education department as "inhuman." "Education department has earned the distinction of dictatorship which is not at all good... What if something happens to our children due to heat?" the aggrieved parents asked. The students said given the unbearable heat, they were unable to do well in the exams. The exam superintending staff is equally disturbed. "We are being treated like animals. Will the education minister or his favorite officials in the department afford to spend three to four hours in classrooms which don't even have a window than to talk of fans," the teachers said. A senior official said the confusion has erupted due to wrong decision-making of a senior official in the Civil Secretariat. "Basically since the day, the news of his jilted love affair with another IAS official who attempted suicide became public, the official has been doing things haphazardly… At a tele-conferencing, he went up to seek sealing of some leading private schools only to show his supremacy," said his colleague asking not to be identified. To a question that the schoolchildren were presently suffering, he said: "Only Education Minister can help them out." The aggrieved parents said despite repeated appeals to Education Minister, Naeem Akhter declined to come to their rescue. Meanwhile the aggrieved have appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and her Advisor Prof Amitabh Mattoo to personally look into the matter. |
