| BJP MLC wants Minority Status for Sikhs in Muslim Majority J&K | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Srinagar, July 2: BJP MLC while demanding minority status for Sikh community in Jammu and Kashmir through a calling attention motion on Saturday alleged that the community is being deprived this status.
He was speaking in Legislative Council today.
He said that Sikhs have been granted minority status by government of India in terms of National Commission for Minorities Act 1992. "Even Muslim countries, where Islamic rules are in vogue, provide sense of security to the minorities," he said.
The BJP MLC was reacting to the government reply received by him on his calling attention notice wherein state government denied the demand of the BJP MLC with regard to granting minority status to Sikh community.
The government in reply stated that in view of the diverse socio-religious demography status of the state, it is very difficult to declare minorities in the state. The government reply further stated that in Jammu Division Hindus are in majority while as Muslims along with other communities are in minority, but there is different situation in Kashmir and Ladakh divisions, where Muslim and Buddhist, respectively are in majority.
"If this status is seen from the district levels, the scenario will be will all-together different. However, all these factors are being examined for appropriate action." read government reply.
BJP MLC while slamming the government over denying minority status to Sikh Community wanted to draw the attention of the government by equating its demand with Muslim countries as J&K is the only Muslim majority state in India and wants the same favour from the Muslim majority state government for Sikh community as enjoyed by minorities in Muslim countries. |
