Early Times Report Jammu, July 3: Throwing safety norms to winds and showing least concern for lives of common people, the Power Development Department (PDD) of Gandhi Nagar division-II has installed power transformer near Gurudwara Sahib, Raipur Satwari much below the prescribed height. Moreover, naked cables are hanging down dangerously, posing serious life threat to pedestrians and livestock. Criticizing the lackadaisical approach of PDD , a local Manjeet Singh said that the un- insulated cables were hanging since the transformer was installed here. The department has also failed to build enclosure, making it unsafe for humans and animals, coming in contact with it. " Most of the transformers have been installed close to the ground with low-lying wires posing grave threat to the lives of people , particularly children and stray cattle" he added. Time and again, locals have also asked PDD field staff, either to fence the transformer or install it at height of more than 5 feet, but yet no action has been taken by the authorities concerned. Executive Engineer PDD Gandhi Nagar II, said that majority of platforms on which the transformers were installed, were constructed decades back. "With the passing of time, new lanes and by lanes were constructed, reducing the height of transformers", he said, adding that department was verifying the facts and would re-install the transformers at prescribed height. He further said that due to overloading in summers season, the insulation of cables connecting transformers with fuses, gets burnt. "I have informed the field staff of said area to replace the cables immediately," he said. |
