AWSC celebrates World Elders Day | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 3: Association for welfare of senior citizens (AWSC) celebrated "World Elders Day 2016" on 1st Oct. The day is celebrated to make certain welfare of elderly people and acknowledge their contribution to the society. The theme for 2016 as was decided by United Nations is 'take a stand against ageism' by drawing attention to and challenging negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older persons, aging and the detrimental impact it has on older people . The failure to tackle ageism undermines older person's rights and hinders their contribution to social, economic, cultural and political life. H B Khajuria senior patron presided over the function. A K Arora president while welcoming the members spoke on the importance of celebrating this day. He also narrated various steps taken by ASWC for the welfare of senior citizens and impressed upon the govt agencies to take concrete steps to mitigate the sufferings of older people by way of providing old age homes and providing dedicated facilities for elderly people of the society. Vikram Gour, Patron AWSC spoke on the subject and hoped that govt deptts who are reportedly provided with adequate funds for providing various facilities for elderly populations of the society should take concrete steps so that older people don't feel let down and helpless. Other participants who spoke on the occasion were J S Sudan, Nirmal Mahajan, SK Jain, SC Lakhi and two recently passed out young engineers from MBSCET Jammu namely Arushi Sabhrwal and Tanveer Hussain. On this occasion senior most members of associations who have crossed 85 years of age , namely O P Modi, O P Gupta, Y P Gupta, S P Wadehra and S N Sharma were also felicitated, |
