Brazen overloading on peripheral roads risking precious lives
Police pay no heed

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 3: The directions of the State High Court in regulation of increasing vehicular traffic in Jammu are being defied with impunity especially in the peripheral areas, encouraging blatant violations of traffic rules by the transporters.
Precious lives are being put to fatal risks repeatedly on peripheral roads everyday due to overloading as the SHOs of concerned police stations do not depute their men for traffic regulation along with the traffic cops as directed by the state high court. The mini buses and larger passenger buses plying on the peripheral roads are brazenly violating traffic rules and endangering precious lives by not only overloading, but also allowing passengers on the roof tops of their vehicles. Students and youth, in school uniforms with their satchels hanging on their backs can be seen hanging from the tail boards and on the roof tops of mini buses in serious threat to their lives, but it is pity that while men in blue turn a blind eye to this dangerous violation, the SHOs do not depute their constabulary for traffic regulations even during peak hours, disregarding the HC directions.
"There is huge rush of school and college students and office goers from out village every morning, but since there are not enough mini buses, everyone tries to get on board causing overloading" said Tilak Raj, a villager of Gajaansoo area. "The transport authorities have failed to rationalize the permits to mini buses. At certain routes, there are so many buses, while on others, there are too few despite heavy load" he added.
Questions are being raised on the intent of the traffic police, who are primarily responsible for checking the menace of overloading. "The traffic cops deliberately turn a blind eye to such brazen violations as they receive their share at the very beginning of the month following which they turn deaf and dumb" alleged Pavitter of the same village.
