Pakistani flags on national highway mock at Govt claims | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 3: Even as the government claims improvement in situation in Kashmir, Pakistani flags have been hoisted atop mobile towers along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway here. The flags have come up at a time when the intelligence agencies have asked the government to improve vigil on the highway, which has been most vulnerable to militant strikes, while more such attacks are apprehended. Near the Tengpora highway here, a huge Pakistan flag is visible from the busy road, where the police and paramilitary jawans stand on guard as part of "Road Opening Party." The Jawans looked angry over Pakistani flag on the mobile tower but could do nothing to bring it down as they were deployed solely to maintain vigil on the highway. "My blood is boiling, what the hell is this happening that we have to see Pakistan flags waving on our motherland India," a Jawan told his colleagues. A police official said some anti-national elements hell-bent to keep the pot boiling have been hoisting these flags at prominent locations in the night hours only to provoke the security forces. "But we have been exercising maximum restraint," he said. Official sources said many green flags are visible along the Srinagar national highway on mobile towers. They said the government is planning to depute special squads to "bring down such illegal flags on our land." For the past few years, the weaving of the Pakistan flag has been a recurring problem in Kashmir, mainly on Fridays after the congregational prayers, when protests are ritually held. But the hoisting of such flags on mobile towers has emerged as a major concern for security agencies. "These green flags surely signify that all is not well and something more needs to be done to bring situation under control," the official sources said. Officials said the presence of these green flags during the ongoing unrest, which erupted in the wake of killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two colleagues on July 8, was enough to convey the Pakistan hand behind the unrest. On August 15, in Tral, a brave soldier of the Victor Force of the Rashtriya riffles risked his life when he climbed a mobile tower to bring down Pakistani flag in the volatile area and hoisted an Indian flag instead on the Independence Day. The Jawan was widely appreciated for his achievement. But since then waving of Pakistan flags elsewhere including the summer capital has grown manifold, putting the security forces on tenterhooks. |
