Drug mafia-health officials' nexus stifles 'Free drug policy' | Union Govt's 'Health for all' initiative in poor health | | Nitesh Sangral
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 3: The, Blame it on the criminal nexus between drug mafia and some health officials, holding pivotal posts, Union Government's "Health for all" initiative is facing ill health in the state as the much hyped 'Free Drug Policy' has failed to see daylight in the state, after more than six months of its approval. It is pertinent to mentioned that State Administrative Council (SAC) which had met under the Chairmanship of Governor NN Vohra had given nod to 'Free Drug Policy' which was supposed to be implemented from June 1, 2016. According to officials the policy has been implemented on papers but ground reality is completely different. Reliable Sources stated that a list of hundreds essential drugs was finalized by the government. Nearly 700 medicines fall under the category of primary use, 200 medicines fall under category of secondary use while all 1200 medicines are categorized for tertiary-care hospitals. "But the influential drug mafia, in connivance with some officials of the department are leaving no stone unturned to prevent the administration from implementing the policy," Sources alleged. However, Director Health Services Jammu Dr Gurjeet Singh said that the 'Free Drug Policy' had been implemented from June 1 this year and the supply was being provided to all health units at District, Sub- District and block level. Contesting the claims made by the Director, the officials Sources stated that strong nexus was creating hurdles in the implementation of the Free Drug Policy in the State and higher ups of the department concerned have kneeled down before the nexus. "Due to lack of funds as well as shortage of drug supply, the 'Free Drug Policy' is hanging in the balance but the concerned authorities have paid no heed toward the issue" said Sources adding that State Government had also made drug policy in 2012, but due to same reason the policy had not been implemented. |
