Metro transport service all set to come up in Jammu, Srinagar | RITES to prepare DPR, conducts feasibility for service | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Jammu and Srinagar, the twin capital cities of Jammu & Kashmir are all set to come up on the metro map since the requisite processes like Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility report are about to be taken up by a reputed company of the country. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state has entrusted the responsibility of preparation of DPR to Rail India Technical and Economic Service better known as RITES. RITES would also conduct the feasibility studies for the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar. Muhammad Azhar, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) said that decision to entrust the responsibility was taken in a meeting held under the chairpersonship of Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti. The PRO said that RITES will initially be preparing the Project Report for a length of 45 kilometers in Srinagar City and 30 kilometers for the city of Jammu. "In the first phase, projects shall be prepared for the routes as suggested in the City Mobility Plan (CMP) of Jammu and Srinagar Cities. The process has been initiated following the offer of the Government of Japan, inviting proposals for technical cooperation under their Technical Cooperation Program for Metro & Railway Projects in the main cities of different states of India," said Azhar. The formal letter of intent in favor of RITES issued by Jammu & Kashmir ERA was handed over to the representative of RITES Piyush Kansal, Group General Manager RITES by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ERA, Vinod Sharma Srinagar here today. The tentative routes for Jammu are Ambphala Chowk to Bari Brahmana via Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Satwari and Bakshi Nagar to Purmandal via B C Road, Bagh-i-Bahu, Trikuta Nagar. The tentative routes suggested in the CMP for Srinagar city are Nowgam Railway station to SKIMS via Bagh-i-Mehtab, Rambagh, Jawahar Nagar, Civil Secretariat, Barbarshah, Nowhatta, Hawal, Alamgari Bazar and Pantha Chowk to Shalteng via Lasjan, Badami Bagh, Lal Chowk, Civil Secretariat, Tatoo Ground, Bemina. The introduction of metro service in the Jammu and Srinagar would go a long way in easing the traffic rush and adding a new dimension to the public transport in the twin capital cities of Jammu & Kashmir. People of both Jammu and Srinagar are craving for modern means of public transport and the metro service is expected to solve the problems of masses to a great extent in this regard. |
