Sushma sets stage for better Sino-India ties | | | If not anything else the Foreign Minister, Sushma Swaraj, has set the stage, during her current visit to Beijing, for Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's China visit somewhere in May for giving a further boost to the ties between India and China. And Sushma Swaraj has stated,on the soil of China, that India is committed to finding an "early settlement" to the vexed boundary issue. The Indian Minister proposed a six-point template to build Sino- India ties to realise the common dream of 'Asian Century'. Sushma Swaraj favoured that the two countries should follow action-oriented approach, broad base bilateral engagement, convergence of common, regional and global interests, develop new areas of cooperation, expand strategic communication, fulfil common aspirations to usher in an "Asian Century". Right from the day Narendra Modi has taken over as Prime Minister, New Delhi has been in search of building cordial relations not only with the neighbouring countries, especially China and Pakistan, but with other nations, including USA,UK,Australia,Japan, and Russia. Swaraj has made it clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government propelled the aspiration of young, vibrant and enterprising generation Modi has already met Chinese President Xi Jinping thrice and once Premier Li Keqian during which he spelled out his dream of promoting cordial ties with China.Andto begin with this exercise Foreign Minister Wang Yi was the first foreign dignitary to have been invited by India after Modi government took over which indicates the importance India attaches to its relations with China.Sushma Swaraj has also revealed that relationship between India and China has reached a level where the two sides have interactions in fields that could not have been imagined some years ago. India and China have made considerable progress in establishing and expanding defence contacts and exchanges, including across the border. Referring to the boundary dispute Swaraj has claimed that talks were on and a headway was possible.Well,in the light of intermittent intrusion into the Indian territory in Ladakh by the Chinese troops the possibilities of an immediate settlement of the border dispute seem to yet not bright.Chinese position is that the border dispute is confined to 2,000 kms mostly on Arunachal Pradesh whereas India asserts that the dispute covered the western side of the border spanning to about 4,000 km.The two countries have held 17 rounds of Special Representative talks so far to resolve the boundary dispute. But success has eluded both the sides. The issue also figured during talks between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi during his historic visit to India in September last year. The two leaders had agreed to make efforts to resolve the border dispute at the earliest. Well in the context of improving relations between the USA and India it is to be seen whether China takes a positive stand on growing New Delhi-Washington ties or toughens its stand in order to keep India on the tenterhooks. On the basis of the first reaction of Beijing against Obama-Modi bonhomie one is pessimistic about any major change in the attitude of China as far as its claim on entire Arunachal Pradesh is concerned.Things seem to have taken new dimensions as far as improving ties between India and the US are concerned.China cannot treat India as an isolated country after its major partner, the erstwhile Soviet union split leaving a weak Russia to back India. Improving economy and political stability have made India assume importance as a growing power in the South Asia region. Its proximity with Washington, Tokyo, Sydney, Moscow and other countries should prove an eye opener for China.Well China can be a gainer if it reciprocates India's bid for promoting friendly ties between New Delhi and Beijing. Once China allows to promote friendly ties with India New Delhi may bank more on Beijing than on Washington for support to India's economy and security stability. The entire south Asia region can become a zone of peace and progress once China stopped its belligerent postures against India.Once it is done Pakistan may to have follow suit because till date it has relished needling India by promoting all weather friendship with China. |
