Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 1 : The wooden electric poles erected some four decades back in Kashmir valley by the Power Development Department (PDD) pose a serious threat to the life and property of the people.
These poles have decayed so much so that these cannot resist the snowfall or the winds at the simplest of the speed giving rise to apprehensions that any untoward incident can take place any time.
"These wooden poles are there for decades together which have decayed with the passage of time and they cannot withstand the pressure anymore. I don't know when the better sense will prevail in the authorities to replace these life threatening poles," said Bashir Ahmad from Narbal, Budgam.
There is always a possibility that these wooden poles my fall and if it happens ever, it for certain that not only the property worth crores of rupees will be destroyed but it can also result in the loss of precious lives. Be it the urban areas of the valley or the rural ones, these decayed wooden poles give sleepless nights to the people.
"The department seems to be in the deep slumber which perhaps is waiting for the worse to happen. Don't authorities catch the sights of the decayed wooden poles which at many places have deviated from their normal posture," said Mohammad Syed from Qamarwari.
These wooden poles are a common sight in the densely populated areas of the Srinagar city and the rural areas are no exception to it. Whenever a snowfall takes place or the wind blows, the decayed wooden poles are the only things that immediately come to the minds of the people.
What has worsened the situation that the cable operators and the cables of the telecommunication department at many places are also placed on these wooden poles in addition to the transmission lines (HT& LT) hence increasing the chances of disasters.
"The department installed cemented poles in many parts of the valley but these replacements are by means good alternative to the wooden poles, in fact the cemented poles pose even greater threat of the disasters because these are no solution given the typical weather conditions of the valley," said Abdul Rehman from Baramulla.
These cemented poles can break even if the light weight vehicle collides with them. The immediate need that arises to put an end to the apprehensions, the department must formulate a comprehensive policy and start the replacement of the decayed wooden poles and also the cemented ones with immediate effect without waiting for the disasters to happen.
