Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 2: As Veteran politician and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig's statement on West Pakistan Refugees has put his party PDP in a quandary, it has jolted to hilt the Congress which continues to be in a state of slumber and sleep on political issues confronting the state. BJP, a likely alliance partner of PDP in the government to be also finds the most vital issue having been snatched as it was this around which the party weaved poll agenda in LS as also the Assembly polls.
Sources said Baig's uttering in favour of WPRs has come as a thunderbolt for the Congress, former MPs in particular who all through their tenure as MPs for two terms used this issue as the lead one for garnering votes but failed to utter a bold statement in front of the party high command, let alone making some difference on the ground with regard to status of the refugees for decades. Sources said Congress leaders are pointing fingers more so towards Madan Lal Sharma ,former MP of the party who they blame played only 'superficial' games over the issue by playing it up only around the polls and choosing to stay silent for rest of tenure as MP.
Sources said a section of leaders within the party are also blaming heavy weights like Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad as responsible for allowing this issue to become as a poll time rhetoric by former MPs who used it for furthering personal gains in the politics. "As MPs none of the Congress stalwarts ever dared to speak on the lines Muzaffar Hussain Baig has spoken in the statement……for whatever reason Baig has demonstrated tremendous courage by speaking in favour of refugees….he has not only invited brickbats from all political quarters in Kashmir but also put his own party in a quandary", said a senior most leader of Congress. Our party was in a state of inertia in the past over this issue and has been caught unawares now, he said adding that rival BJP has already snatched the issue and consolidated politically hugely.
Sources also said that both BJP's and now PDP leader's raised pitch over the issue of West Pakistan Refugees in a bold way Jammu based leaders of Congress are ruing inaction of party leadership which until the fag end of term with National Conference did not heed to concerns expressed at frequent intervals not did they anticipate BJP making meaningful, if not decisive forays around the issue to the extent that it has invoked attention from the tallest leader of PDP , no matter the latter is terming his statement as his personal views. Congress did try to give serious dimension to its worries and concerns over the inaction of party for entire tenure by queuing up at doorsteps of high command ahead of polls and by giving ultimatums on possible damage the party accrue, but it was too late by then, the party leader lamented.
