Beig's middle path suggestion on WPRs opposed | Creating difficulties for Kashmiris living outside Kashmir | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 2: As expected, PDP leader and Lok Sabha MP Muzzaffar Hussain Beig's middle path formulation on refugees from West Pakistan has triggered a fierce controversy in the Valley. The NC, separatist outfits like Tehrik-e-Hurriyat (TH) of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, JKLF of Yasin Malik, J&K Democratic Freedom Party (J&KDFP) of Shabir Ahmad Shah , Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) of three independent MLAs and Dukhtarane-Millat (DM) of Aasiya Andrabi and the so-called Kashmiri civil society groups like the Kashmir Center for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS) have all joined hands against Beig and denounced him and his view on the issue of West Pakistan refugees. On Saturday, Beig had described the issue as humanitarian and suggested that a middle path should be adopted to settle this humanitarian issue. He had even invoked teachings of Quran to make his point. He had said the Quran nowhere talks about citizens as all have the same rights. The refugees from West Pakistan, who have been living in different parts of Jammu province since 1947, do not exercise citizenship rights in the state. They are considered worse than the brute. On Sunday, the NC, the TH, the JKLF, the JKDFP, the AIP and the DM and the KCSDS came down heavily on Beig and declared that they would not allow the permanent settlement of these refugees in J&K and that it was for the Indian State to take care of them and settle them outside the state. Reacting to the Beig's middle path formulation, the TH spokesman Ayaz Akbar, among other things, said: The "NC's founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah sold Kashmir for power, Peoples Democratic Party seems to have traded honor and dignity of the state". The self-styled chairman of JKLF Yasin Malik said: "The Baig's remarks about WP refugees are meant to appease his RSS masters to get the union ministry. The statement of Baig is a glaring example of his Kashmir enmity". Shabir Ahmad Shah said: "By raking up the issue of WPRs, the PDP is trying to strike a good deal with BJP on government formation in the state. Such nonsense of finding 'middle path' can come only from the mouth of a failed lawyer". Aasiya Andrabi said: "The Baig's statement has proved that PDP is subordinate branch of RSS. For the sake of power Baig and his party are ready to barter Muslim majority status of J&K. For power they will sell their honor. Kashmiris should remain vigilant to these nefarious designs and stand up against the settlement of outsiders in Jammu & Kashmir". The KCSDS said: "The kind of perverted logic he uses to deceptively convince the people about the humanitarian character of the issue by invoking Islam and Quran is highly deplorable. By juggling about the issue from various perspectives, he cannot obfuscate the contours of the issue and confuse people of the state". The NC general secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar said: "No non-state subject can become a permanent resident of Jammu & Kashmir and the NC will oppose any such move tooth and nail". "Being an imminent lawyer, Baig should have thought hundred times before making such assertions. The NC would stand like a rock in the way of implementation of such moves. We will not allow settlement of WPRs," he also said. It is a matter of serious concern that in the 21 century we have in modern India such perverted forces and anti-humanity elements in the Valley. They are the outfits and elements which have been creating problems for the Kashmiri Muslims, including Kashmiri Muslim students, living and studying outside the Valley. They are creating hatred between the Kashmiri Muslims and the rest of the Indians ignoring the grave consequences which follow in the rest of the country in the wake of their outrageous statements. Credit goes to Beig who, instead of kneeling, held his ground firmly even on Sunday. He reiterated what he had said on Saturday. Holding his ground, he on Sunday said: "I did not specify the parameters of the solution but only indicated the guidelines for the same. According to me, this is a humanitarian problem and not a political problem. The refugees are already settled here and they have a right to vote for Parliament. The issue is whether they can be granted the status of permanent residents of the state. I indicated that this can be done only if the Jammu & Kashmir Constitution permits it. "Those who understand the constitution of the State know that there is no provision to that effect. Secondly, I indicated that so far as the point of view of Muslims is concerned, it should be guided by the teachings of Holy Quran and Sunnah, while Hindus may have their own point of view. Is there anything wrong in suggesting that Muslims should follow the tenants of their faith in finding a solution to this humanitarian problem? Finally I indicated that if refugees from Pakistan who are already enjoying the citizenship of India, are to be given status of permanent residency of the State, then wouldn't it be possible for Bangladeshi refugees in India to claim similar status where-ever they are presently settled in India. Am I wrong in pointing out this crucial issue for the consideration of Government of India?" Will the fanatics in Kashmir consider the sane views of Beig and revise their whole approach towards the refugees from West Pakistan, who have been leading a miserable life since 1947? They have to review there whole stand taking into consideration the negative impact their statements are causing outside the Kashmir Valley. Similarly, the Indian State has to assert its authority and take all the necessary steps aimed at empowering the hapless refuges from West Pakistan. |
