JAMMU, Feb 2: Previous coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah failed to fill up 55 percent posts of specialist doctors in Community Health Centres (CHCs) across the state which were lying vacant for years, putting patient care in the peripheral hospital in jeopardy.
Sources informed Early Times that 320 posts of Specialists were sanctioned couple of years back for Community Health Centres (CHCs) across the state but previous coalition government failed to fill up 142 posts of specialists which were lying vacant before the formation of coalition government.
"Similarly, out of more than 2200 posts of heath workers for Sub health centres sanctioned across the state, only 600 are filled while others are lying vacant", sources said and added that another 1200 posts of Nursing staff sanctioned for primary health centres and community health centres sanctioned across the state, the state government only filled around 900 posts and more than 290 posts were still lying vacant.
"The shortage of specialist doctors in CHCs, was affecting patient care in the peripheral health units and at the same time increasing pressure on the already over burdened district hospitals" sources said adding that even the patients are being put to grave inconvenience of travelling huge distances to reach district hospitals.
Sources further said that the unwillingness on the part of specialist doctors to perform in rural areas cannot be considered less than playing with the lives of the people and depriving them of their fundamental right. While regretting that instead of taking stern action against such delinquent doctors the policy planners in the Health Department prefer to watch the situation as mute spectators.
However, repeated call to Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Gazanffar Hussain failed as his phone was persistently switched off.
