Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 2 : The authorities in the Kashmir valley snapped power supply to the residents leaving them to pass their lives under the blanket of darkness. Barely an hour after the snowfall, the Power Development Department (PDD) snapped electricity to most of the areas.
People in most areas of the city took to the roads and staged demonstrations accusing authorities of taking them for a ride. Residents in both metered and non-metered areas held protests at various places including Kawdara, Tarbal, Haftchinar, Bemina and Rainawari and also threatened to uninstall digital meters in case the issue is not resolved.
The residents appealed Governor N N Vohra to bang the authorities for making their lives allegedly miserable without any rhyme or reason.
"We are yet to come out of the shock received in September past year after the gushing flood waters washed away our dwellings. Despite being aware about the plight of people of Srinagar, authorities seems to be less bothered to mitigate the woes of flood hit people," said Zia-ud-Din Qadri, a former bureaucrat from Zaldagar.
Qadri said that people in Srinagar have been bearing the brunt of corruption nepotism and anti people policies since 1947. He claimed that Kashmiri people have always been treated as dumb driven cattle. "I want the PDD Chief to give me single reason as to why power was snapped, they were initially claiming that people are resorting to power theft but now they have checking squads, though no change in poor power scenario," said Showkat Hussain Kachroo a government teacher.
Showkat claimed that as soon as snowfall stopped power supply too was snapped which is yet to be restored in many areas. "Why should people pay hundreds of rupees monthly bill when there is no power available to them? Why should our children study under candle light," he questioned.
One of the agitated protesters while mocking at PDD said that mere few inches snow watered down the entire government machinery. "Everyone be it rich or poor is living distressful life in the aftermath of past year's devastating floods. Believe me we have no water even for ablution not talk about taking bath that too with hot water," said Azim Mushtaq a B Tech student.
"This is a final warning to PDD to not to take sufferings of the people for granted or else we will be forced to uninstall meters and whoever stops us will face the consequences," said Arshid Shafi, a resident of old city.
