GMC hospital running without ARS since 2010 | 59 bite cases reported daily, administration unmoved | | Nitesh Sangral
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: The premier hospital of Jammu Province - Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is running without Anti-Rabies Serum (ARS) since 2010 while 59 bite cases were reported there per day. Official sources told Early Times that in January 1,822 bites cases were reported and 70 per cent of them were said to be ARS but the patients were asked to purchase it on their own and its cost is more than Rs 2600. The increasing incidents of bites and non-availability of ARS has put lives of poor patients at risk. "The anti-rabies serum needed to treat animal bite cases categorized as Class III, was being procured by the GMCH purchase committee but for the last five years the administration of hospital had stopped the facility," they claimed, adding that the rabies vaccine, which is used for Class I and Class II category bites, is available but whenever it comes for critical bites, administration raises their hands. They, however, said the administration of hospital claimed that the issue was taken up with the higher authority of hospital but they only gave assurances but nothing had been done in this regard so far. The poor patients, who can't afford costly ARS from the market, have been facing problems on this account. When contacted, Associated Professor and Head of Community Medicine, Dr Dinesh Kumar admitted that the supply of Anti-Rabies Serum has been stopped in the hospital and said, "We have intimated to the Superintendent of hospital and he told that the administration had been working on it." He said the ARS would be available in the hospital as soon as possible for needy patients. The superintendent was not available for comments.
