JAMMU, Feb 2: Botanical Club of Botany Department and Government Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial Degree College (GGLDMDC) Hiranagar under the stewardship of OP Sharma Vidyarthi today hosted 331st Wetland Day Tree Talk. According to press release, around 60 students, scholars and professors familiarized themselves with nesting, roosting, feeding and food habits of wetland birds like Kingfishers, Cormorants, Bar headed geese, Egrets, Herons, Pelicans, Darters, storks and cranes. Prof Geeta Sumbali while planting a plant sapling of walnut smelling Chilvil Holoptelia integrifolia focused on the importance of biodiversity of J&K wetlands and shared that edible hydrophytic plants like Lotuses, Gorgon nuts, Water chestnuts, Water Ipomoea, Swamp cabbage are linked to people's livelihoods and add useful nutritive values to local cusines. Prof Vijay Chandan HoD Botany shared that Mansar Saruinsar are familiar Ramsar wetlands and centers of religious and cultural significance for Dogras. Wetland ecology helps in ground water recharge, regulation of various food chains, provide sustenance to fishermen and help in flood control. |
