SMVDU-Cambridge awarded prestigious UGC-UKIERI thematic partnership project 2/2/2015 11:19:17 PM Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 2: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University(SMVDU) and University of Cambridge, UK have been selected for the prestigious University Grants Commission (UGC) - United Kingdom India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) thematic Partnership project. The award has been given for the project titled "Earthquake Hazard Evaluation in Jammu and Kashmir Himalaya and Western Indo-Gangetic Plains" submitted jointly by Dr. Sunil Kumar Wanchoo, Director I/c School of Innovation and Community Development and Assistant Professor of Physics (SMVDU) and Professor Keith Priestley, Bullard Laboratories (University of Cambridge) as Principal Investigators. Dr. Supriyo Mitra (IISER Kolkata) and Dr. Alex Copley (University of Cambridge) are also a part of this collaborative project. The purpose of the proposed research is to increase the capability and effectiveness in earthquake science in NW India by the operation of a modern, broadband seismic network to locate earthquakes and identify active faults, and through training of young scientists in the range of available modern techniques and methodologies in area of seismology. 16 broadband seismographs are proposed to be setup in J&K as a part this project. Dr. Wanchoo and Dr. Mitra are already engaged in setting up and running of seismographs in J&K Himalaya and have also commissioned 9 broadband seismographs in J&K. Dr. Wanchoo has also been granted a Major Research Project by UGC to further the seismological research in this region which falls under the seismic Zone IV and V in collaboration with Dr. Mitra.   Share This News with Your Friends on Social Network     Comment on this Story
