JK Public School Celebrate World Wetlands Day | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: JK Public School, Kunjwani today celebrated World Wetland Day in the school premises. According to press release, World Wetlands Day has served as a good platform for raising public awareness on wetlands and their significance, as well as the need to conserve them which emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between wetlands and agriculture and the need to work together with a unified vision for both for long-term sustainability. Events are held worldwide to highlight values and challenges of wetlands. World Wetlands Day marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Iran,1971) which is signed by 158 countries for the conservation and wise use of wetlands of international importance through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation. On this day, attention is sought on the increasing importance of wetlands to provide us with sufficient fresh water and to prevent floods. In a special assembly conducted in the premises of J.K. Public School, Kunjwani, the students were made aware about the need to conserve these Wetlands for the security of our future as they replenish our water, fish and rice that feed millions. These Wetlands are an area of land where water covers the soil e.g. marshes, lakes, lagoons, mangroves and bogs. The students were told about the water found in these wetlands which can be fresh water, brackish or saltwater. They were told that these are the most diverse biologically of all the eco systems as they serve as a home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The international theme for the World Wetlands 2015 is 'Wetlands as our future as the future of humanity depends on these wetlands.' |
