Hamid Gul's death leaves Separatist camp worried | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 16: Separatist leaders in Kashmir are immensely worried over the demise of former ISI Chief and architect of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in early 90s. It is a common understanding in Kashmir that most of the Kashmiri youth who crossed over line of control (LoC) in early 1990 till 1995 when militancy was in its infancy in Jammu and Kashmir would all meet former ISIS Chief of Pakistan, Hamid Gul to take consultations from him about propagating concept of Jihad in Jammu and Kashmir. Death of Hamid Gul who died of brain hemorrhage in Muree on Saturday at the age of 79 was mourned by separatist leaders of Jammu and Kashmir including Pro Pakistan and Hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani by terming Gul as "a great supporter of Kashmiris freedom struggle." Expressing profound grief, moderate separatist leaders and Heads of their own factions Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Hilal War also termed death of Gul as worrisome when it comes to "Kashmir issue". Gul according to experts was a close associate of General. Zia ul Haq of Pakistan who after grabbing power in Pakistan posted Gul as ISI chief at the most crucial time of1987 when militancy had just began expanding its shadows in Jammu and Kashmir and Gul then in power did everything he could do to propagate militancy in Jammu and Kashmir against India. Experts say that even after his retirement Gul was outspoken on Kashmir issue and was only General of Pakistan then opposing Delhi publicly across the world besides he is also discredited for nurturing militancy in Punjab and Afghanistan during his stint as chief of ISI. It is said that until recently Gull remained active supporter of jihadi groups in Kashmir and Afghanistan and had shared stages on multiple occasions with jihadi leaders of Pakistan like Mumbai attack accused Hafiz Saeed. On multiple occasions separatist leaders who would visit Pakistan until recently according to sources would always meet Gull there and take consultations from him about Kashmir issue and on many occasion separatist leaders publically issued their photographs with Gulfor publications in press. |
