Jammu, Aug 16: With controversy over the nominations to the J&K State Sports Council refusing to die down, sources in the Government have disclosed that a senior bureaucrat misled the Minister for Sports and even the Chief Minister to get his blue eyed candidate in the list of 29 nominees to the Council despite the fact that he had already served four terms as the member State ports Council and three consecutive terms as the Joint Secretary despite a dismal performance.
Siddharth Sharma, riding on his proximity to a senior bureaucrat has been nominated to the J&K State Sports Council for the fifth term despite his unimpressive record as a sportsperson or sports administrator. More regrettably, he managed to be elected as the Joint secretary of the Council for three consecutive terms, elbowing out many deserving and more eligible candidates. "Siddharth Sharma made it to the Council representing the Billiards and Snooker association, of which he has been president for three terms in violation of Council guidelines" said a former member of the State sports Council. "His repeated nomination to the Council is an example of how politicians and government babus have used the Council to rehabilitate their sycophants" he added.
Sources also divulge that a senior bureaucrat in the Chief Minister's secretariat changed the list finalized by the Deputy Chief Minister and the Sports Minister and dropped many a deserving names to accommodate his blue eyed. "Kuldeep Handoo, an international Wushu player and many times gold medalist, Kudip Gupta, secretary of the Kabaddi Association and a Sher-i-Kashmir award winner and Dushyant Sharma, former ace wrestler of the country who appeared in the original list were dropped to accommodate Arjun Choudhary, a businessman, Rajinder Singh, brother of Lal Singh and Siddarth Sharma, who was nominated for the record fifth time" informed a source.
The nominations have been changed against the spirit of the instructions of the Chief Minister, who wanted that only genuine sportspersons should be nominated and same people should not be nominated over and over again. Interestingly, ET has also learnt that Siddharth Sharma who has been joint secretary Jammu for three consecutive terms is again lobbying with the help of this senior bureaucrat to be elected as Joint secretary for the fourth time.
Meanwhile, there is also resentment amongst the sportsmen, sports administrators and promoters of Jammu region that Jammu has been extended a raw deal in the nominations as there are only eight members in the 29 member Council from Jammu. "The idea of regional balance has totally been ignored in the nominations and while president (CM) and vice president (Sports Minister) are both from Kashmir, it is imperative that Secretary is from Jammu region and a new face is given a chance to be the joint secretary Jammu" said a sports administrator of Jammu, who has served two terms as member Sports Council previously.
