Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 16: Amid ever rising anti-BJP feelings in Jammu region, the former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad today reached here for a three-day visit to the State.
After his brief meeting with party leaders and confidents at Udhampur this afternoon, he is scheduled to have night stay at Patnitop before reaching Dodatomorrow where he will address a public rally and other meetings.
The visit of Azad assumes more significance in the wake of prevailing anti-BJP sentiment in Jammu region where the people are up in arms against the saffron party for its complete surrender before PDP on all the issues. Demand for establishment of AIIMS in Jammu is the most burning issue, which has rocked entire Jammu region.
According to the sources, Azad is understood to have been constantly in touch with senior Congress leaders in Jammu and his close confidents over day to day developments on the issue of AIIMS. The former Health Minister in Manmohan Singh Government has been monitoring all the developments and also keeping his men well informed over the issue as he knows the official formalities and legal process involved in setting up an AIIMS, sources explained.
Even as AIIMS Coordination Committee has been maintaining its non-political character, sources said that Azad is likely to discuss with his party leaders the strategy for Congress vis-à-vis its role on the issue. While a section of Congress leaders are in favour of only moral support to AIIMS CC, the Jammu based Congressmen are stressing for an active support and virtually spearhead the struggle for taking on ruling BJP on the analogy of 2008 Amarnath Land Agitation, sources said.
Further, sources said the third front of dissidents in Congress, who have maintained a temporary ceasefire with PCC president G A Mir on the purported instruction of Ghulam Nabi Azad, are also looking for some direction over their new role in State Congress as the same was assured to them after Autumn session of the Parliament.
Therefore, the three-day visit of Azad is going to be very hectic and crucial for the forthcoming political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said.
