No miracles from ensuing Indo-Pak talks | | | On one side Prime Minister Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, sends his good wishes to India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi,in connection with India's Independence day on the other hand Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing on the Indian border outposts on the LOC.What does it mean ? It does indicate there is severe conflict and lack of coordination between the establishment in Islamabad and the Pakistani Army. The two have stopping being on the same page. And the latest heavy ceasefire violations may be another attempt by Pakistani forces at increasing the level of conflict between the civilian regime and the Army after Islamabad informed New Delhi that it was sending Nawaz Sharif's national security adviser for talks with his Indian counterpart because the Army in Pakistan have not been keen to encourage the civilian Government in Islamabad to engage India in bilateral dialogue.Even as India and Pakistan traded fire at the LoC, which left 3 people dead and 10 injured, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sent a message to Prime Minister Modi to wish him for independence day, saying that "friendly, cooperative and good relations" was in the interest of South Asia. "We in Pakistan sincerely hope to settle all our bilateral issues through a sustained and comprehensive dialogue and usher in a new era of mutual trust and cooperation," Sharif wrote in a letter. In a separate message to President Pranab Mukherjee, Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain wrote that Pakistan was committed to "promote friendly relations between the two countries for peace and prosperity in the region. " On Friday, when Pakistan marked its independence day, PM Modi had tweeted his " Greetings & good wishes to the people of Pakistan on their Independence Day."However Modi's words and sentiments were belied on the border between both countries, with another day of shelling and mortar crossfire on the LoC, the seventh consecutive day of ceasefire violations. According to defence officials, atleast 6 people died and 22 people have been injured in the past two days of firing along the LoC in Poonch district of Balakote. Local officials said the incessant shelling had also delayed taking those injured to hospital. Unlike past years, there was no customary exchange of sweets at the border crossing at Wagah, as the BSF decided not to "receive or give" sweets to Pakistani Rangers on August 14 and 15th to protest recent terror attacks. The decision follows a similar move not to exchange Eid greetings last month in protest over killings due to shelling on the border. These two contradictory stance, one adopted by the Government in Islamabad, and the other by the Pakistani Army keep on causing a lot of confusion among political leaders in India, both from the ruling party and from the opposition. It is so because the BJP led NDA Government does not know which side it should believe, the Army or the civilian regime in Islamabad. That the Government of India and the Indian politicians are confused over the totally contrary stance being taken by the Army in Pakistan and the civilian regime in Islamabad is but natural.Well Pakistan's National security Adviser,Sartaj Aziz, will be in New Delhi onAugust 23 to resume the Indo-Pak bilateral dialogue with his counterpart,Ajit Doval. Will the talks between the two national security advisers yield any results ? Possibilities of these bilateral talks producing some positive results are remote because of the conflicting and contradictory stand taken by the Army in Pakistan and the civilian regime in Islamabad. Are the civilian Government in Islamabad and the Army in Pakistan work in collaboration to confuse India or there are really some fissures between the two sides ? Well the answer to this question lies in the outcome of the talks between the two national security advisers. Political observers do not attach much importance to the ensuing talks on the plea that Pakistan was simply performing the role it was expected to play by the developed nations, especially the United States. Well Nawaz Sharif seems to be a helpless Prime Minister. This is indicated by the reaction from the extremists to his message of good wishes sent to India on its Independence day.In Pakistan . Sharif's message of cooperation with India was challenged by the Islamist political opposition party the Jamaat-e-Islami(JI), that is part of the coalition with Imran Khan's PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. At a flag raising ceremony in Islamabad, JI general secretary Liaqat Baloch said, the Sharif government should "abandon the idea of friendship with India"."National interests alone should guide the foreign policy," Baloch has stated. Hence one need not expect miracles from the ensuing bilateral talks. |
