Social Welfare department fails to spread awareness about welfare schemes in Kupwara

Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Jan 5: The tall claims of government that they are for the well being of the entire society are no more found on ground as Social Welfare department in this North Kashmir district has failed to provide awareness and information to the people about the various state and centrally sponsored schemes.
Sources said that people living in dozens of far flung areas of Kupwara district including Karnah, Teetwal, Tangdhar, Chowkibal, Sogam, Lolab and Trehgam and its adjoining areas are lacking information about social welfare schemes due to which they can not avail the benefits of these schemes.
"Who says that the government is doing much for the well being of the entire society, social welfare department has lost its identity as the department has become like a blood sucker and is no more for the welfare of the people," sources told Early Times.
Sources said the department has failed in providing the information about centrally sponsored schemes due to which the old aged people are suffering at large.
"The department concerned was supposed to make awareness in rural areas of Kupwara district, so that the schemes which were meant for the rural masses could have given them benefits. The corruption existing in the system has put everyone in a silent mode," sources said.
A group of beneficiaries said that the department concerned is providing wrong information about their monthly pension forcing which they have to make many rounds of the banks.
"Government of India (GoI) is providing huge amount to the state for the welfare of the people. However, the state government has let the department free without any accountability like checks and balances, so that beneficiaries will not suffer," said the beneficiaries.
They said the government should digitize the data of state and centrally sponsored schemes for the welfare of the people and old aged people like widows and visually impaired so that the benefits reached the concerned quarters.
Local residents of various rural villages of the district said the social welfare department has adopted the wrong policies due to which common masses especially widows, old aged persons are suffering a lot.
"There should be overall information of all schemes in rural areas. The government must create an awareness camp for which there is a dire need of publicity for the benefit of general public," said the locals.
There are hundreds of weeded out/migrated/reported death (RD) cases which need to be filled at the earliest, so that other people can take benefit of these schemes at large, locals added.
