BJP leader as caretaker CM? | 'Can't keep on surrendering every time' | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 5: As Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed continues to be under treatment at the AIIMS, New Delhi, a few BJP leaders in J&K have started hectic lobbying to put in place a caretaker CM from the BJP. Sources told Early Times that many BJP leaders are averse to the idea about the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti taking over as the Chief Minister even temporarily. "We have not received any communique from the party high command that Mehbooba may take over as the Chief Minister till Mufti Mohammad Sayeed recovers fully," a senior BJP leader told Early Times on Tuesday. He said, "We are hopeful about Mufti Sayeed getting well soon. Till he recovers we can have a caretaker Chief Minister at place. Since the day Mufti Sayeed has been hospitalized the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh is taking care." Insiders revealed that local BJP leaders have got it conveyed to the party high command that it should not give in to the PDP's demand to have a caretaker Chief Minister from PDP at place. "We cannot afford to surrender this time around," said a BJP leader. However, he was quick to add, "We are all worried about Mufti Sayeed's health and are seeking the feedback from doctors regularly. We hope he gets well soon and resumes the office." He said that at local level no discussions have taken place over change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir neither have any BJP leaders been informed about it. "If we go by the rule book then in absence of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister can take over as the caretaker Chief Minister and there should be no confusion about it," the BJP leader added. Pertinently, 79-year old Sayeed was flown to New Delhi on December 24 and admitted to AIIMS ICU with complaints of fever and neck pain after his health condition had deteriorated in Srinagar. A spokesman of AIIMS recently said, "A panel of specialists from different departments is monitoring the Chief Minister's health. We are continuously monitoring health condition of the Chief Minister and keeping track of all his health related developments that take place during the day." Sayeed, who took over as the Chief Minister of the PDP-BJP alliance Government in March 2015, had developed health problems soon after he undertook a day-long tour of Srinagar city on December 22 amidst intense cold. Since the day Mufti has been admitted at AIIMS speculations are rife that there would be change of guard in the State and Mehbooba is likely to don her father's mantle. However, there are reports that some black sheep in PDP have joined the hands with BJP and are trying their best to prevent Mehbooba from taking over the top post. |
