Northern Grid report puts JK Power Ministry in tight-spot | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report srinagar, Jan 5: Accusations leveled by the Power Development Department (PDD) about people making non-judicious use of electricity due to which state reels under the darkness have fallen flat with the recent report released by the Northern Grid revealing the chaos within the JK government. The report of the Northern Grid issued last month stated that the power supply to Jammu and Kashmir at present has been curtailed- resulting in power crisis and erratic supplies. On the contrary, the PDD is spending hefty amounts out of the state exchequer to sermonize people about the judicious use of electricity. It has also become a norm that whenever the government is asked about the reasons behind such a dreadful shortage of power in the state, it accuses people of not adhering to the guidelines and violating norms. The PDD has been accusing people of indulging in power thefts, saying such actions lead to power shortage in the state. But what at present is coming to fore is that there has been no initiative taken by the power ministry in the state to make any addition into the supplies the state receives from the northern grid. The report in possession of the Early Times from the northern grid has stated that the state is getting 2064 MWs against the required 2433 MWs resulting in shortage of 369 MWs. As per the rules, the Jammu and Kashmir is entitled to draw 935.01 MUs and the actual drawal for the previous month was a negative figure of -8.42 MUs meaning under drawal. Daily Peak/Off Peak Demand on an average during that period stood at the lowest among the constituents which include Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, HP, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand Also, what is more ironic for the state is that in Delhi the unit price for first 100 is about 2.96 Rs. In Himachal Pradesh, the unit price for first 150 units which is lesser than that of Jammu and Kashmir. Such revelations are putting question mark over the functioning of the power ministry in the state and its accusations that people are using electricity non- judiciously. On the other hand, the state authorities here were seen beating the trumpet of minimising the T&D losses by implementing R-ARDRP scheme. The slow pace of such program has not only drained the exchequer rigorously but has also put the question mark over inordinate delay in the projects which otherwise merit highest concern of the peoples' representatives. The report of the northern grid issued earlier has on one hand spilled beans about how people are being taken for a ride and hefty amounts from them, in shape of bills, is being taken from them without even providing them the half of the service they deserve and have a right for. |
