Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 5: A Naib Tehsildar from Gandertbal has harassed an Early Times reporter. The reporter had brought to fore axing of walnut trees by him in his compound. Ever since the news was published in the Early Times, the 'influential offender', BA Raina has been harassing ET Correspondent for highlighting the issue in the media. Sources said that the news about the illegal cutting of walnut tree by Raina put the officials on alert who realize fine from him for chopping the rare species without seeking permission from the authorities concerned. As far as the proofs of illegal axing of walnut tree is concerned, the photographs and video clips which lies as a proof with ET, clearly shows as to how the person holding an axe in his hand is felling the tree in broad day light. The Preservation of Specified Trees Act, 1969 suggests that the illegal axing or chopping of walnut tree is equivalent to 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' and even an owner be it Chief Minister himself is bounded to get permission from the concerned authorities to fell the tree. When contacted Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kangan, G.A Mir said that Raina was fined, the moment issue was highlighted in ET. "As far as his threatening calls to the journalist are concerned, you can move an application before the district administration, and necessary actions will be accordingly taken against him for threatening a working journalist for reporting truth," Mir told 'Early Times'. Pertinently, Early Times in its January 2nd issue had carried a news "Ganderbal babu axing walnut tree with impunity'' that put Naib Tehsildar and his acquaintances on toes. A day after news was reported, someone who introduced himself as a high up journalist of central Ganderbal insisted this correspondent to reveal the source that had exposed Naib Tehsildar. However when he refused to reveal the same, B.A Raina himself contacted him and threatened him of dire consequences in case he won't identify the source immediately. "Listen since you are a journalist I have nothing to do with you, I just want you to identify the 'third-class' source else you and your organization will face separate consequences for exposing Executive Magistrate," Raina told this correspondent, adding "I will be forced to lodge an FIR and move a defamation suit against you organization if you won't handover the source to me." |
