Between devil & deep sea, Mehbooba not in hurry to form Govt
1/13/2016 9:56:15 PM
Mehbooba Mufti is not in a hurry to form the Government.
She knows that since the state is under the Governor's rule thereby there is no constitutional crisis she has enough time with her to form the Government. But she cannot wait for six months, for which period the Governor's rule can last, for forming the Government because if she takes such a long time there could be possibility of some other political permutation and combination which may keep her away from heading the Government. She is not in a hurry because she is in a bewilderment before taking a final decision. In fact she is between the devil and the deep sea. To be precise she between the Congress which has offered her unconditional support and the BJP which could, if the alliance continued, rectify its mistakes by opening the strings of the purse of the central Government for enabling Jammu and Kashmir to witness major economic development. Inside reports say that if Mufti Mohd. Sayeed went against the party tide and forged an alliance with the BJP he did it with twin purposes. One he wanted to promote regional balance because he felt that the BJP was Jammu centric. Secondly, Mufti Sayeed believed that an alliance with the BJP could help him in receiving liberal financial assistance from the BJP led NDA Government. However, Mehbooba is a shrewd politician and has come to believe that the BJP has lost its connect with people of Jammu region and hence she could afford to dump the party. Secondly, she has come to believe that during the last over 10 months the BJP led NDA Government delayed release flood relief and when it was released people treated it as much too inadequate to help them undo their losses.Thirdly, Mehbooba has not been happy with the way the BJP has been raking up controversial issues like the one related to Article 370, and Article 35-A, national flag versus the state flag. She wants the BJP to clear its stand on such issues so that she is motivated to reframe the alliance with the BJP. She is not happy with the demand of the BJP for more share in the council of ministers and better Portfolios. Against this the congress has kept its doors open and has offered unconditional support to Mehbooba for forming the Government. One thing that has encouraged Mehbooba to think of reviving the PDP alliance with the BJP was leaders of BJP announcing their support to the leadership of Mehbooba. Also, if she accepts the offer of support from the Congress she would be violating the experiment that her father had conducted in forging an alliance with a party with which there was no ideological proximity. Even when Mufi Sayeed had decided to form a coalition Government in alliance with the BJP. Some senior PDP leaders were vocal in voicing their criticism. But since the Mufti enjoyed great influence among people and the party those who were opposed to alliance with the BJP had no other alternative but to keep silent. However, with the demise of Mufti Mohd. Sayeed even small PDP leaders have voiced their opposition to keep alliance with the BJP in tact. They want new alliance with the Congress to be forged which could provide a chance to the PDP to revive its hold on people and check any erosion in its vote bank. But Mehbooba Mufti has not forgotten the way she and her father were insulted by the Congress high command when it turned the demand of the Muftis to allow Mufti Sayeed to head the coalition Government after 2005. In 2002 the Congress and the PDP had formed a coalition Government with the agreement that for three years Mufti Sayeed will head the Government and some senior Congress leader would head the Government for the remaining three years. Between 2002 and 2005 Mufti Sayeed was able to provide clear governance to people in the state and that was the reason he wanted the arrangement to continue. But the Congress high command opted for Ghulam Nabi Azad to head the Government. Rest is history. Hence Mehbooba is trying to weigh all prons and cons if she keeps the alliance with BJP in tact or if she forged an alliance with the Congress.
