Locals demand action against encroachment, beautification of water body

Kathua, Feb.28: Inhabitants of village Chann Arorian, 15 km here from Kathua town today strictly condemned the ignorance of water bodies in entire district including in the village Chann Arorian that met with the demand of water in village for long but now in dilapidated position.
Vinay Paul Sharma apprised that the pond that was used for different purposes to mitigate the demand of water in village, occupied 29 kanal, now is completely encroached and in dilapidated position. Paul said the pond is used for dustbin and piles of garbage are seen easily resulting smell, soft place for insects and means to communicative diseases in entire areas. All these occur due to ignorance by district administration and Panchayat body.
Joginder Singh, another local, said neighbour has encroached entire pond and Revenue officials back the menace. He said despite several reminders, no action has been taken against any encroachers that would an alarming bell for water body. Deepak Raina, a social leader, said despite Apex and High courts' direction to protect water bodies, government that make claim for development fails to protect water bodies at ground level. He said there are numbers of ponds in district Kathua including Chann Arorian which is completely ignored by concerned departments. He informed that government allocates funds to save water bodies but funds are not properly used at ground level. The villagers appealed Governor to develop water body in Chann Arorian and other part of the district which is their ultimate demand that would solve number of problems rose due to shortage of water.
When contacted to DDC Kathua Ramesh Kumar IAS, he assured thorough inquiry of encroachment along the pond and assured to set up a committee in this regard. He said an inquiry committee will be set up to find out the total encroached land and action taken thereafter.
