Srinagar, Feb 28: Voice for Rights, Jammu organized a 'One-Day Conference on Crime Against Women' with special reference to Rape Law in collaboration with District Administration, Srinagar, HELP Foundation Jammu and Kashmir and College of Education, M. A. Road, Srinagar on Sunday. The conference held at College of Education, M. A. Road, Srinagar was attended by prominent lawyers, police officers, media persons, students, teachers and people from all sections of the society. Chairperson of the Voice for Rights, Jammu, Advocate Deepika Singh Rajawat in her introductory speech said the conference was aimed at providing the highest level of training, information and strategies and professionals, who are responder and advocates to victims of crimes against women. She said her target audience was people employed by the government or non-profit agencies in the fields of law enforcement, prosecution, social work, victim's advocacy, therapy, probation or parole, campus safety and medicine who work directly with the victims of crime. "The goal of the One-Day Conference on Crime Against Women is to provide practical instructions, using current information, the newest ideas and the most successful intervention strategies, to those professionals responsible for combating the many and varied forms of crimes against women," Deepika said. An authority on crime against women, Prof. Ved Kumai Ji of the Department of Law, Delhi University, spoke about the need for community care for victims of sexual assault and delved on the issues of socio-legal aspects of rape trail and Criminal Amendment Act. Another expert on crime against women and Director Trainings, Lawyers Collective, New Delhi, Advocate Ujwala Kadrekar informed the participants about medico-legal aspects of rape trial, hospital care for victims of sexual assault, evidence and role of courts in trails of rape, police attitudes, problems in rape law and rape law reforms. Advocate Faisal Qadri, lawyer Jammu and Kashmir High Court Srinagar spoke about rape cases in Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Amendment Act. On the occasion, Daughters of Mother India, a documentary film by Vibha Bakshi was screened on the occasion. The film reveals the aftermath of horrific rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi in December 2012, which led to country-wide protests. The conference was received well by the audience who showed eagerness in knowing about technicalities involved in helping the rape victims while tackling it legally. |
