Is Jaitley's budget a setback to government formation in J-K? | PDP is mute to presentation of financial statement | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 1: With Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley 'virtually' allocating nothing to Jammu & Kashmir in his budget presented in the parliament on Monday (February 29) there seems to be bleak chances of government in the state as of now. Many of the people were expecting some sops for the state in the union budget, but as it did not happen most of the residents got disappointed. Barring Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the political parties of the state too have reacted on expected lines on the budget. The PDP has kept the cards close to its chest and only time will tell when the cards would be displayed. Political pundits and observers had been maintaining that some of the issues raised by PDP in the recent past would find a mention in the union budget. This they said would lead to breaking of ice and subsequently result in formation of government with PDP joining hands with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in this regard. Since no such announcement was made in the union budget there was disappointment in general for the people of state and more so for those who had pinned hopes on it vis-à-vis government formation. As on date it seems quite impossible that PDP and BJP would renew the alliance and form the new government in the state. It would require something 'special' from BJP to appease its former partner in the state so that the two political parties resume their partnership and form the next government. Rumours are doing round that PDP President Mehbooba Mufti would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in run-up to government formation. However, no time-frame has so far been set for the meeting between Mehbooba and Modi. However in an indication that the two parties might renew their alliance in the future the PDP is yet to respond to the budget presented by the union finance minister in the parliament. The party did not issue any statement in this regard thus giving an indication that the party wants to give some more time to its former partner so that the government is formed in the state. One cannot rule out a tacit understanding between PDP and BJP in making Jammu & Kashmir specific confidence building measures (CBMs) as demanded by PDP President from the central government. There are chances that some announcement may come in near future and it may subsequently lead to the government formation in Jammu & Kashmir between PDP and BJP. |
