Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 7: The Aadhaar cards of thousands of Srinagar women here have landed in the wrong hands as the administration got the printed cards dumped in marketplaces, giving ample opportunity to miscreants to take away as many cards of their choice, as possible. The negligence on the part of the authorities has raised concerns over the safety of the female folk, who fear that the pictures and other details as mentioned on the cards might get misused, particularly on the social media, which remains flooded with such abuse. Early Times is in possession of relevant evidence in support of the story. Call it fate or coincidence ironically the complaints have propped up at a time when the country is bracing up for the celebrations of the International Women's Day, which falls on March 8. Official sources said instead of getting the biometric cards handed over to the bona fide owners, the concerned authorities get the cards dumped at busy places of respective localities, making it free for anyone to take the cards as there's no check on who takes the cards and why. Early Times has captured video evidence of how scores of cards were dumped at a marketplace, where people were trying their luck to see if their card could be there in the carton. Mistaking it as a windfall of some government incentive, people were seen grabbing scores of cards and running away. As the news of Aadhaar Cards lying in the marketplace spread, scores of people rushed to see if their much-awaited card could be there. Though many of the residents didn't find their cards there, the issue took an ugly turn when cards of all the girls were found missing. Eyewitnesses said some road-Romeo's who were on prowl in the area grabbed all such cards and fled. This raised apprehensions in the minds of the female folk and their family members, who raised a hue and cry as how come the government jeopardize the safety of the female folk. "How do we know that the details mentioned in the cards particularly pictures will not be posted on the social media for mischief," apprehended a man who couldn't find his daughter's card anywhere. While people started raising a hue and cry and contacted the concerned authorities, there came another shocker. The authorities said there was "no harm in dumping the cards at marketplaces as it would be impossible for the concerned to distribute the same at individual addresses." "Individual distribution of cards is impossible, so dumping the same in the nearest market preferably a shopkeeper is the ideal solution," the authorities said. The residents of densely populated downtown said most of them couldn't get the cards because the moment they were dumped in the area, locality kids took the same as playing material, and in the process, spoiled the cards. In Shaher-e-Khaas also, the cards of scores of girls had gone missing. "There's rarely any girl who received her Aadhaar card in our locality," said a lawyer adding it was "criminal negligence" on the part of the authorities. A women rights group, which is contemplating legal action against the administration, has sought personal intervention of Governor NN Vohra and his Raj Bhawan aide BB Vyas. "Ours is conservative society... Otherwise also no civilized society will ever like to let it happen, Vohra Sahib must initiate strict action against the concerned officials for negligence of duties," the complainants said. Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation Bashir Ahmed Khan said he was unaware of the complaints. "Strict action will be taken against those found guilty…Drop in at my office along with the complaint," Khan told Early Times. District Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmed Lone said the matter will be seriously looked into. The DC office had designated Srinagar Municipal Corporation as the nodal agency for making of the Aadhaar cards. But the process has been messy. While other districts of Kashmir have already completed issuance of cards, Srinagar lags behind - giving a tough time to the residents, who have been unable to fill Aadhaar numbers on the CAPD ration tickets and other such service forms. While Srinagar has been slowest in issuance of the biometric cards and has missed several deadlines, most of the details on the cards have been wrongly fed. |
