Congress' Khour message unlikely to impress Jammu | Fishing in troubled waters | | Early Times Report jammu, Mar 7: Finding the prevailing political situation in Jammu province conducive for settling scores with what it calls "unpopular" and "untrustworthy" BJP, the out-of-power Congress leadership has decided to accelerate its political activities in the region. Its immediate objective is to give the people of Jammu to understand that it is the only party that takes care of their aspirations and ensures equitable development of all the three regions of the State. "It is the Congress Party alone which represents aspirations of the people in all the three regions. While we have served the people to the best of its ability, Congress Party would continue to remain steadfast in serving the people and remain committed for equitable development of the regions," asserted JKPCC Chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir while addressing a gathering of party workers at Khour on Sunday. The claim of the JKPCC was as spurious as it was laughable. The Congress has never ever cared for the sentiments and urges of the people of Jammu province despite the fact that Jammu remained its core constituency for decades. The fact of the matter is that the Congress, like the BJP, not only enjoyed power in the State at the cost of the people of Jammu province, but also promoted the interests of Kashmir and remained soft on Kashmiri separatists and communalists. So much so, the Congress high command never considered any Jammu Congressman fit for the position of JKPCC chief. All the JKPCC chiefs, barring one, were from Kashmir and they belonged to one particular religious sect. People say that Ghulam Nabi Azad, who remained president of the JKPCC chief for many years and also led the State as Chief Minister for less than three years, was from Jammu. This is a false claim. He is an ethnic Kashmiri and has its roots in the Kulgam area of Kashmir. Actually, he is Bhat and he and his family members had told the Kashmiri people after Azad became the Chief Minister that "he is Kashmiri". Everything is on record and can be easily verified. One can catalogue here innumerable instances to show that the Congress, like the BJP and the NC, was rabidly anti-Jammu and patently Kashmir and one-community-centric party. A reference here to just two instances in this regard would be enough to set the record straight. One, The Azad-led coalition Government subverted the Wazir Commission report on new administrative units, including districts, and created eight new districts, four each in Jammu province and Kashmir Valley. The Wazir Commission report had recommended three districts for Jammu considering the size, topography and accessibility factors and only one for Kashmir. Two, the Azad-led coalition Government had also planned to enhance 25 per cent seats in the Assembly province-wise to scuttle the demand in Jammu for a proper representation in the Assembly. Had he succeeded in doing that, the representation of Jammu in the Assembly would have been further decreased and Kashmir would have grabbed more than 60 per cent seats in the Assembly. The truth is that the Congress, like the BJP and other political parties, are biased against Jammu. It, like other parties, fools the people of Jammu province and after winning the elections, ditches them and furthers the Kashmiri interests. It would be proper to say that it was the Congress which unleashed a process of marginalization in Jammu province and the parties like the BJP did all that they could to complete that process. That's the reason that the people of Jammu today curse themselves and the parties they voted for in the past elections. They are in search of a leader who could help them to achieve what they legitimately deserve as part and parcel of the Indian polity independent of Kashmir or otherwise. |
