Maha Shivratri celebrated with religious fervour, gaiety
Thousands of devotees throng Shiv temples

JAMMU, Mar 7 : Maha Shivratri which relates to great night of Lord Shiva was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety all over the State. While Kashmiri Pandits held night long prayers and pooja in their houses to celebrate the Maha Shivratri festival, thousands of people thronged the Shiv temples across the Jammu region today to offer special prayers on the occasion of Maha Shivratri and paid obeisance to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Thousands of devotees thronged the Aap Shamboo temple Roop Nagar from early in the morning to participate in the Shivratri festival and offered special prayers on the occasion. There was huge rush of devotees from early in the morning and it swelled in thousands as the day proceeded.
There were huge queues of people waiting for the darshan in front of temple for a long time and the rush continued late up to the night.
Various social and religious organizations had also organized bhandaras to offer prashad to devotees.
Another grand function was held in Dewan Mandir here where a huge rush of devotees was witnessed from early in the morning.
Amidst chanting of religious slogans, Jhankis of Lord Shiva were taken out by the devotees. The temple was highly decorated and special prayers were held on the occasion. The devotees performed Pooja of Lord by offering holy water, flowers, Bel Patri, milk and other things which are dear to Mahadev.
In the temple a grand bhandara was also organized as usual by the social and religious organizations.
Large number of devotees also thronged the Ranbireshwar Temple, Jammu and Shiv temples at Canal road and Tawi bridge to perform special pooja of Lord Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shivratri today.
On the occasion bhandaras and Prashad was served to devotees.
A large number of devotees also thronged the Jamvant Gufa, Peer Khoh in connection with celebration of Maha Shivratri festival on the third day of festival today.
Maha Shivratri festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervour at Shiv khori, here today.
Amidst chanting of religious slogans the devotees in large number thronged the shrine and offered special prayers.
A grand Shiv Khori mela was also organized by the district administration Reasi, Shri Shiv Khori Shrine Board(SSKSB) and Tourism department on the eve of Shivratri at Ransoo, base camp of holy shrine.
Langars and Bhandaras were arranged for the pilgrims at the base camp, Ransoo and near the shrine. The shrine was highly decorated for the last two days and administration had made elaborate arrangements for the successful conduct of mela.
As per the Executive Officer, SSKSB, Mahesh Sharma, about 1,07,453 devotees have visited Shivkhori so far and the yatra was going on smoothly.
As all over India the festival of Shivratri was celebrated in Poonch too. In this way programs held at all Shiv Mandirs in Poonch. Programs held at Shiv Mandir Khakha Nawan, Shiv Mandir Dungas, Shiv Khori, Shri Dashnami Akhara Mandir, Budha Amar nath Mandi and all Shiv Mandir in Poonch. According to the sources the main programe of the festival held at Shiv Khori Mandin Lakha Dheri Poonch, where all district officers and all religious political and socials were present on the occasion. DC Poonch M Haroon Malik, SSP Poonch J S Johar, Brigade Comander 93 Brigade Poonch NS Barar, Dy SP HQ Mujeeb ur Rehman and SHO Poonch Jatindar Raina were also present on the occasion who greeted people on the occasion of holy festival. Maha Shivratri, which literally translates to great night of Shiva" is a Hindu festival largely celebrated with full religious fervour enthuses and gaiety in Ramban. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva, an important deity in Hindu culture.
The District and Police administration Ramban made adequate security and other arrangements for the convenience of devotees in all Temples of the Ramban Town.
Hairath (Maha Shivratri), the day Shiva was married to the Goddess Parvati and marks the convergence of Shiva and Shakti, was celebrated today throughout the Kashmir valley, where fresh snowfall was received on the hills which is being considered auspicious.
After joining night-long puja in their respective houses, members greeted each other on the occasion of Salaam.
Since Maha Shivratri, the most important festival of Kashmiri pandits, fell on a Monday, it is considered more auspicious.
Muslims and members of other communities greeted their Kashmiri pandit brethren on the occasion.
A large number of devotees were visiting temples, particularly Shankaracharya temple on the hill top of Takhat-e-Suliman, since early this morning despite cold weather conditions.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti greeted people on the occasion.
Authorities have set up special fish sale counters at different places in the valley for Kashmiri pandits, who have not migrated along with other community members in 90s or returned here. The Shivratri festival extends to about three weeks in households of Kashmiri Pandits and each day or a group of days, has a special name and religious function which includes social performances also.
Some of them include Akodah, Hurya Aatham, Dyara Daham, Vagarye Bah, Heracnia Truvah, Donya Mavas and Tila Aatham. On each day, different functions are held. The Mahashivratri festival, observed as "Hairath" by Kashmiri Pandits on the marriage anniversary of Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma, begins on the first day of Phalgun Krishna Paksha and ends on the Amavasi day in Phalgun. In between, there are numerous auspicious days like Hur Ashtami.
Walnuts, whose shape represents the universe, play an important part in 'Hairath' rituals. Walnuts are filled in earthen pots and then filled with water. The water is changed every day of the festival. A big earthen pot, two medium sized earthern pots as many small earthen pots, clay modelled to the shape of elephant trunk and seven bowls are used in the Hairath ritual and they are known as 'watuk'.
Along with other parts of the country, the festival of Maha Shivaratri was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety here on Monday. People thronged the ancient Lord Shiva temple on the bank of Devika river.
Thousands of devotees took holy dip in the Devika and later paid obeisance at the Shiva temple. And all the peoples from the diffrents area paid obeisance at the shiva mandir from different sides of udhampur like jib madir , phangial mandir and others etc .
People of different age groups, including children, young and elders, thronged the temple for paying obeisance to Lord Shiva and offering water on the holy Shivlingam. The devotees especially offered Bael and Bael Patri (Golden Apple and its leaves) to Lord Shiva amidst chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya. All temples were decorated on the occasion in the city. The devotees offered milk and water on the Shivlingam. Free langars were also arranged on the occasion.
According to APP Shambu temple priest Madan Lal, festival of Maha Shivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism.
The Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on Shivaratri as it is believed that His worship with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of his past sins.Meanwhile, the police had made elaborate security arrangements to meet any untoward incident.
Maha Shivratri was celebrated across the Jammu region with religious fervour and gaiety. Students and staff members of RM Public school celebrated Maha Shivratri in school premises with great fervor and gaiety. Trustee RM Public School Rita Mengi was the chief guest on the occasion. A special assembly was organized in the premises in which wonderful dances and bhajans were performed. After the function Principal Ravinder Kour encouraged threw light on the importance of the occasion.
On the occasion of Maha Shivratri BJYM District General Secretary Keshav Chopra organized langar at Talab Tillo Chowk of W No -30. MLA Jammu West and State President BJP Sat Sharma started the Langar, Senior Leader BJP Parneesh Mahajan and Ayodhya Gupta, were also accompanied by Sat Sharma. Sat Sharma expressed Shivratri greetings to the people of the state and said that Shivratri is such a festival which reminds us how to get rid of evils and lead a pious life.
Keshav Chopra while expressing greetings said that these festivals also provide an opportunity to come together as a mark of respect towards our religion. Keshav hoped that these festivals will bring peace and prosperity to the state.
Shiv Bhole Nath Committee, Krishan Nagar, Jammu organised langar for the devotees of the area on the occasion of Shivratri. Prominent among the other who were present on the occasion included Rahul Dogra, Shiv, Dhareej Kalsi, Sourab Basan, Anil, Rohit, Paras, Ravi, & Rinku.
