Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 9: The summer capital of Srinagar was Wednesday afternoon put on high alert when militants appeared on the outskirts near Hazratbal here and exchanged gunfire with security forces. No one was hurt in the incident.
Police said a group of heavily armed militants were spotted near Khimber, some three miles from the historic Hazratbal shrine. But as the police cordoned the area, the militants, who as per police sources, were three to four in number, opened fire and managed to flee, leaving behind one AK 47 riffle.
It is the second shootout in Khimber area, where a month back, the police had claimed to have killed a militant. The presence of the militants again in the area has put the security agencies on tenterhooks with an alert having been sounded across the city.
Even as police and paramilitary CRPF intensified roadside frisking and search operations, sources said there was apprehension of major militant strike in the city.
Police sources said "till now the intelligence network has been so foolproof that no militant stays back in city given the fear of being trapped." "Till now Srinagar has been a militant free district but their presence on the outskirts is a clear cut message that they are desperate to strike here," said the sources said.
Officials said there have already been inputs that the militants want to target some major government-owned installation in Srinagar, where security has been beefed up. "Their presence on the outskirts vindicates our intelligence inputs," the source said adding it wasn't sure whether or not the militants might have already sneaked into the city after exchange of fire in Khimber.
A police official said the militants were desperate to make their presence felt in the summer capital, which has largely remained incident free this year.
It's the second militant strike on the Srinagar outskirts after the Fidayeen attack on the EDI Complex Pampore in February, when five security personnel including two para commando captains and a civilian were killed.
