Congleader clarifies over Achan landfill mess | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 9: Even as the Early Times didn't mention name of any political party or politician allegedly involved in the controversy surrounding the deadlock over the dumping of garbage at the Achen landfill site, a Congress leader has voluntarily come forward to say that he has done nothing wrong. While some protesters including "land mafia" recently attacked the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) staffers, particularly drivers, preventing them from dumping garbage at the landfill site, over 2000 metric tons of garbage has accumulated on the Srinagar roads since the March 5 incident. The SMC, which suspended sanitation operations in the summer capital, says at least 14 of its drivers were wounded and 30 vehicles damaged in the mob attacks. Early Times had reported that some politicians, who allegedly own hundreds of kanals of land in the area, incite protests through "land mafia" as they want the landfill site be relocated to pave way for construction of satellite townships. In response to the story, the defeated candidate of Congress from Eidgah constituency, Imtiyaz Khan has come forward with a "clarification". It reads: "This has reference to news relating above mentioned subject where under (you) have mentioned that political workers / leader are creating problems there." "Sir this is not correct. Our Congress party MLC Sr leader raised this issue in legislative council many times and Govt assured there that this garbage dump will removed (or) this problem would be dealt with on scientific basis but government failed keep its promises (and) the result was resentment in the of Eidgah constituency," said Imtiyaz, who is also the Organizing Secretary of the J&K State Pradesh Congress. "I also called on so many ministers and concerned officers of SMC Srinagar but of no avail so I may say that there is no hand of (politicians) in the matter. This garbage dump has created lot of problems in the area but unfortunately government is sleeping in the matter. The officers of SMC Srinagar are still bent upon dumping garbage there in open," the Congress leader added in letter to the Early Times. |
