Gateway of J&K turns into gateway of death, Illegal trucks' parking invites frequent accidents | | | Arun Trisal
Early Times Report
Kathua, June 2: Ironically, the place once known as Gateway of J&K now is getting an 'acronym'- death trap as despite of collecting huge revenue everyday from Lakhanpur, the J&K government and Excise & Taxation department have failed to provide sufficient parking place to trucks which eats up huge space of the National highway at Lakhanpur causing inconvenience to the drivers on the road. Although a large number of accidents occur on routine be it minor of fatal yet both the concerned authorities and the district administration are acting like mute spectators. If recalled here recently one car bearing registration no. PB-02 V-0141 collided with a bus bearing registration no UP-22T-6008 due to illegal encroachment due to idle parking on both sides of National highway resulting tragic death of a youth Kulveer Singh S/o Avtaar Singh R/o Trikuta Nagar Jammu. Soon after the tragic incident the locals came to roads and staged a protest against irresponsible attitude of the authorities towards frequent incidents of accidents and unnatural deaths. Among protestors one Ajay Kumar, a local youth said that dozens of people have lost precious lives every month in accidents at Lakhanpur due to illegal parking of trucks on both side of the road. He alleged on Excise & Taxation department for delay in clearance of permission to these drivers who are forced to halt their vehicles on road and further demanded speedy process in clearance of permission and road before beginning of Amar Nath yatra. Anil Sharma, a shopkeeper of area said Transport Agents & concerned deptt delay the process resulting trucks have to wait for 3-5 days for permission that affects traffic in the area. He said that a circular also stands issued by state government for the 24*7 hours service to transporter but the order yet has not been implemented for the last 2 years reasons better known to officials concerned. Bhupinder Singh a truck driver admitted the illegal parking on NH but pointed out the delay process of concerned department besides unavailability of parking place. When contacted to DDC Kathua, Ramesh Kumar, IAS assured to pass strict instructions to Traffic police for control on illegal parking across the national Highway at Lakhanpur to minimize such fatal incidents. When asked about preparedness for huge inflow of traffic during Amar Nath Yatra, DDC Kathua informed that a committee will be constituted to facilitate the pilgrimages whereas special provision of parking, medical facility, security, drinking water/sanitary arrangements will be set up on priority basis. |
