Early Times Report

Jammu, Jane 2: Surabhi Nursery School opened by University of Jammu for educating kids of university and non university employees is designed more as revenue generating source than providing quality education to small children entering there to learn basics of education.
The sources informed Early Times that the mind of small child is flexibly impressionable and nursery school is meant to consolidate the children emotionally and make their foundation stout and strong, but the things are rather the other way round.
The sources said that now the school has proceeded on summer vacation from 1st June to 18 July but the home task is confined to fill the scratch book in as much as there is reportedly no prescribed syllabus for the children. Saying that nursery school in the university campus should be a model for others to follow as an example , the sources told that school is being operated from laboratory of Home Sciences department containing on room with attached two small rooms where the children are dumped like goats and sheeps with no prescribed uniform for kids to give a look of a well established school. The three teachers engaged for teaching around fifty kids are not well trained teachers and lack teaching skills needed for providing quality education to small children vis-a-viz fee structure on the higher side with latest revision and enhancement in fee pattern from Rs.600 to 720 ,Rs 700 to 840, Rs 800 to 960 for university employees and Rs. 700 to 840, Rs. 800 to 960, Rs.900 to 1080 non university employees as per age group as also increase in security and annual admission charges besides Rs. 100 per month shall also be charged and retained by the school as infrastructure development fee.
The sources said that when school does not have its own separate building and its location does not give a look like a school, the parents of children feel embarrassed for putting extra burden of Rs 100 as infrastructure development besides enhancement of tuition fee per month. They pointed out that which infrastructure the University proposes to develop when basic facilities of nursery school are awfully missing to develop the overall personality of school children . Sharing their experience about the school with Early Times correspondent, the parents of non university employees said that they got their children admitted in varsity school with the impression that their children will have a very good ambience of university atmosphere as compared to outside schools but in vain, further said, adding that the atmosphere of the school is worst than other schools with no extra curricular activities for the children to grow physically, mentally and emotionally in a better way with no provision of syllabus, revision, periodical tests and final exams.
The management of well established nursery school in the city said that in order to create a sense of responsibility in the minds of kids of LKG and UKG, a proper syllabus was devised for children of both categories and regular tests, revision of syllabus, final exams are conducted and being a day care Centre, the kids are properly looked after with provision to keep them engaged during summer vacation by organising summer camp in the school arranging different activities commensurate with the age group of children. The sources further said that tuition fee of kids in Day Care Centre has also been enhanced from Rs 1200 to 1440 , Rs. 1400 to 1680, Rs. 1600 to 1920 for university employees and Rs. 1400 to 1680, Rs. 1600 to 1920, 1800 to 2160 for non university employees besides unceasing security and admission fee. They said that university nursery school is barely an eye wash and Day Care Centre has been reduced to a level of uncaring centre with no assistance to children to ease themselves with careful handling of staff and no scope to keep the children busy during summer break as is provided in other schools. They told that fee structure has been increased substantially on the authorisation of Vice Chancellor of Jammu University by Dean Academic Affairs, but there is no officer in the varsity to whom the parents of children can approach who is specifically assigned the duties to listen and address grievances of parents and their children faces by them. Terming it as an act of fleecing the parents, the sources informed that security refund is subject to three advance notice to school and whenever any person comply with their instructions giving three months notice for getting security refunded, the child is left abandoned without paying scant care for three months thus exploiting both parents and children for non of their fault, they bemoaned. The sources told that on the face of atmosphere prevailing in school, it appears that since the children of high profile officers and professors are not studying in the school and why a senior officer should keep an eye on the performance of teachers engaged to carry on the affairs of school. They said that VC of JU authorising enhancement of fee structure does not seem to have ever visited this school in the campus to see for himself the appalling conditions in which children of university and non university employees are making their sluggish beginning in the field of education which otherwise would have improved substantially for children, but who cares, they rued.
