Early Times Report
jammu, June 2: J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in the Legislative Council charged the NC with politicizing the issue of Kashmiri Hindus' return to the Valley and said that the security environment in Kashmir was not inspiring. The situation was grave to the extent that political workers live in hotels of Srinagar under security cover, she said.
"You are trying to exploit my remarks on Kashmiri Pandits. I have said that our workers, your workers, the workers of NC, PDP, Congress and BJP still live in hotels of Srinagar under security cover. They have PSOs and they don't go to their villages. So I said if they can't go then how we can say to our Kashmiri Pandit brothers to go and live there in villages?", she said while winding up the discussion on Motion of Thanks on Governor's address.
Mehbooba Mufti is not just Chief Minister of the state. She also holds the vital Home portfolio. She has many intelligence agencies under her control, besides the police. She knows the ground situation and what she said as Chief Minister and Home Minister on the floor of the House must set the record straight and establish that the security environment in the Valley doesn't permit the state government to bring back the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus to the Valley.
She, in fact, made a larger point. She said that the situation was so alarming that even political workers (all belonging to a particular faith) had to migrate from their villages and towns and stay put in various hotels of Srinagar. She virtually said that had these "political workers" not migrated to Srinagar, they would have been liquidated by extremists/terrorists. It is a fact that hundreds of political workers lost their lives during these years of secessionist violence in the Valley.
Now that none other than the state Chief Minister has acknowledged that the situation as it exists in the valley is not inspiring, it is time for the authorities to think of some other alternatives. The best alternative is creation of separate homeland for them north-east of Jhelum invested with Union Territory status where the Indian Constitution flows freely and where they can lead a safe, secure and dignified life. The creation of separate homeland for internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus will meet their 26 year old demand and it will also help New Delhi to tackle the menace of separatism and terrorism in Kashmir more effectively. But more than that, the creation of separate homeland for them in the Valley would puncture the separatists' balloon and also defeat the Pakistani evil machinations.
Even otherwise, the creation of separate homeland for Kashmiri Hindus within the Valley has become imperative considering the fact that they have rejected the composite townships/transit camp proposals, saying they do not want to live with those who expelled them in 1990.
