65 square kilometers demined at Tosamaidan: Government | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 2: The state government today said that 65 square kilometers of the area of Tosamaidan has been demined and steps are afoot to develop infrastructure so that tourists visit this tourist place in Central Kashmir's Budgam district. Replying to a question by Omar Abdullah, Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar told the legislative Assembly that army has certified that an area of 65 square kilometers is safe since it has been demined. He said the state government is committed towards the development of Tosamaidan and steps would be taken in this regard. In his question, Omar who is the MLA from Beerwah in Budgam said that state government is putting the lives of people visiting the Tosamaidan at risk as according to him the area has not been demined so far. He asked the state government to make a statement that the area is safe and there is no threat to the people visiting the area. "The Tosamaidan area is underdeveloped with the infrastructure missing at the place. Tourists would not visit the place at present given the fact that there are no facilities there. Is the government going to float any tender at the national or international levels so that infrastructure is developed at Tosamaidan," said Omar. The MLA Beerwah also said that road leading to Tosamaidan via Shunglipora is in mess and it needs to be developed on modern lines. In his reply Akhtar said that no concrete jungle would be allowed in Tosamaidan and that locals would be given the opportunity to develop the meadow so that there is no interference with the eco-system. He said that an amount of Rs. 73 crores have been earmarked for the development of Yusmarg, Doodhpathri and Tosamaidan under the Prime Minister's package announced last year. It would be in place to mention here that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti during her visit to Tosamaidan on Sunday last reprimanded the tourism department officials and also the officials of Budgam district for failing to get the clearance from the army till date. She also pointed out that if the clearance is pending how can be the meadow thrown open for tourists. Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Mir Altaf Ahmad had told the Chief Minister that district administration is yet to get the clarification from the army. When enquired about the DC said that army is yet to give the green signal that there is no harm in visiting the Tosamaidan area. Mehbooba took a strong note of the same and asked the officials as why there has been a delay in getting the clearance from army. The officials both from the district as well as the Department of Tourism failed to give a satisfactory reply and as such were reprimanded by the Chief Minister. |
