After Tosh Maidan, Akhnoor, Army asked to vacate Khurbathang Plateau firing range | BJP's stoic silence under scanner | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 15: After evacuation of Army occupied land from Tosh Maidan in Kashmir and Akhnoor firing range in Jammu last year, the new BJP-PDP coalition government of Jammu and Kashmir headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as a part of its Common Minimum program asked the army to vacate land measuring 262.24 acres Khurbathang Plateau firing range falls in Ladakh region bordering China and Pakistan and has directed the Army to handover the possession of the land to District Administration Kargil. The fresh direction asking the army to vacate the land in Ladakh has raised massive outrage among the nationalist forces in Jammu who are questioning the government decision and silence of BJP over the issue. "It is a compromise with national security--- Government is playing with fire--- I don't understand why BJP is watching as mute spectator" said Harsh Dev Singh. Defense analyst Brigadier Anil Gupta expressing anguish over the decision of the government said, "It is unfortunate that government is indulging in action that will demoralize the troops. Army is not acquiring the land for fun, but to train its soldiers who are defending the nation's sovereignty." Congress leader and former Minister R S Chib asked the government to stop playing politics over security related issues. "Ladakh is strategically important as our troops on one side are handling Pakistan while on other side are handling China" former Minister said. Even though the government at the time of vacating Tosh Maidan and Akhnoor firing ranges promised that government will provide alternative land to the army, but nothing has been done so far as a result of which soldiers have to go for shooting practice to Rajasthan. Similarly the government though offered 75 acres land to army at Mulbekh and 187 acres land in upper Khurbathang plateau for their operational and logistic need, but as per the defense experts, land is not quite conducive for establishment of firing range, moreover it will take time for army to establish a new range which makes direct impact on the practice of soldiers. With Army authorities no so happy with the directives of the State Government, will Union Government intervene in the matter, is the million dollar question. |
