Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 15: University of Kashmir has left hundreds of its students dismayed over the poor internet service within the campus, which has badly impacted their research work.
A group of aggrieved students and scholars told Early Times that for the past six months the internet & Wi-Fi of the university has not been functioning properly.
"Due to bad internet service within the varsity campus, not only we but the scholars and faculty are disappointed as our academic work is badly hit," a group of students said.
Being the only top academic and research institution in the valley, the varsity has been the alma mater of numerous renowned professors, scholars, intellectuals and post graduates, who are involved in the creation of intellectual wealth in the state. Considering the scarcity of well equipped universities, the varsity's proper functioning is pre-requisite for the intellectual and educational advancement of young minds.
"The faculty members and scholars who have to rely on the internet for their research work have been most adversely affected by the unreliable slow broad band and Wi-Fi of the university," said one of the faculty members while wishing anonymity. "How will the society expect best from us under these conditions and that too in the internet age," asked a scholar.
Not only has the poor internet service hit students' work, but it also has impacted their pockets, though they pay the internet fee in advance to the varsity, and their precious time.
The scholars and students have to spend their pocket money in internet cafes outside the university campus, besides roaming outside to find a space in these cafes. Either they have to spend hefty sums on the internet packs for using it through the net setter and other such devices. "Our day's time is consumed in searching space in cafes, even though they are not suitable for academic work given their ambience and rush of people," a PhD scholar said. They called it embarrassing for the university authorities, saying that in 21st century it is shameful that internet does not work properly and smoothly in university. "The modern education is impracticable without availing the resources on internet. We seek the intervention of vice chancellor of the university for proper functioning of the university's broad band internet and Wi-Fi. This should be the priority otherwise we would suffer like anything as we have been for the past so many months," students said.
