Tourism Department fails to frame comprehensive strategy | | | Arun Singh

Jammu, Apr 15: The State Tourism Department has miserably failed to formulate comprehensive tourism policy for sustainable tourism in the State which led to execution of many unplanned projects without ascertaining their feasibility. Sources told Early Times that in order to meet the growing demand with the increase in tourist flow in the State, a comprehensive tourism strategy should have been framed. However, according to them, even surveys were not conducted for identification of potential tourist destinations. "The work of preparation of vision document/ master plan allotted by the Tourism Department to a firm M/s Tata Strategic Management Group for completion within four months is still incomplete. However the firm had submitted draft final report for Kashmir," they said. The department took up development of various tourist places without conducting the baseline survey and without ascertaining feasibility of the tourist places, they disclosed further adding that the Ministry of Tourism Government of India had prepared report for preparation of 20 years perspective plan for sustainable tourism in the State which was accepted by the State government in but neither long term (20 years) no short term (5 years) perspective plans was formulated by the State Government. Moreover, apart from this, a vision document/ master plan to facilitate development of tourism while safeguarding the natural resources, heritage and physical environment was also be prepared. The documents were to focus on places of tourist interest, tourist products, bottlenecks and areas of concern and also the date regarding flow of tourists, they said. |
