JAMMU, Apr 15: Even as the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is making tall claims of making Jammu city as a tourist hub, however, the dilapidated conditions of most of the interior roads including some of the major ones for quite some time deflates the declaration since poor basic infrastructure can never make a city a 'dream tourist destination'.
While most of the BJP legislators advocate tourism promotion in Jammu region especially in Jammu city but even after assuming power in the state the Saffron Party has so far failed to live up to the expectations of the Jammuites who were given a whole lot of promises to augment the tourism sector in the province.
The other day BJP MLA from Jammu East Assembly segment Rajesh Gupta gave another assurance that Jammu city will be developed as a major tourist hub but Mr Legislator must be told that until and unless the basic infrastructure like roads are not improved such announcements will remain insignificant.
MLA Gupta first should have look at the poor condition of the city roads some of which lie in his home constituency. The MLA need to put in some serious as well as concerted efforts to improve the deteriorating thoroughfares within the city.
MLA Rajesh Gupta while attending a religious function on Tuesday said that Jammu which is popularly known as the 'City of Temples' will soon be developed further to woo the devotees visiting J&K for making the City as the prime tourist destination by providing the required edifice readily to the stakeholders.
"Jammu people are very patient…It is this virtue of residents of Jammu city that tourists and devotees love to visit the Temple City again and again," he said.
However, Mr MLA whose intentions to develop Jammu city as a major tourist hub in the state may have been honest but must be reminded that most of the city roads particularly in old city areas have developed pot holes which are not less than the size of a small trench while he must also know there are several roads which are sinking. The road leading to Jogi Gate Cremation Ground to and fro Hotel Fortune Riviera is one such glaring example which loudly tells the sordid saga of Jammu city roads. This particular road stretch has developed so many pot holes that one cannot even able to see the surface. It needs to be mentioned here that No re-carpeting or major repair work has been carried out on this road for the last several years. Another example of poor health of roads is sinking of some of the portion of the road opposite city Square Mall. "The condition of most of the internal roads all over the city is pathetic. Bad roads make it difficult to drive on certain stretches particularly when one hits the portion near Jogi Gate which no less than a hell…..Every vehicle driver uses only the main road to avoid the bumpy journeys on such a bad road," Vivek Dubey, a commuter, told Early Times.
"Because of the delay in repair of roads, the commuters have no other option but to avoid them in order to keep their vehicles free from developing any faults," he added.
Apart from the severely potholed condition of the roads, the Jammu residents also suffer from growing traffic that has made the roads congested, while indiscriminate parking of vehicles on both sides of the roads has added to their woes.
