Minister Ganga administers a hollow threat | Row over AIIMS | | ET Report JAMMU, Apr 15: Minister for Industry and Commerce Chander Prakash Ganga is a well-meaning person. He knows that things are very gloomy for the BJP in Jammu region because of which the BJP has been sharing some power in Jammu and Kashmir and that the party is losing its popularity in this region at a very rapid pace. He, like his party colleagues in the government and legislature, knows that they are on the back foot as well as at the receiving end. On Tuesday, he mustered courage and made a loud statement without realizing his position and ignoring the party high command's stand on the issue he took up advertently or inadvertently. His statement came in the backdrop of the ongoing fierce row over the issue of establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The case in point is the minister's declaration in the Government Women College Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. If there was no AIIMS in Jammu, there will be no AIIMS in Kashmir, he said. "If All-India Institute of Medical Sciences-like institution is not established in Jammu, they (BJP) will not allow its establishment in Pulwama in Kashmir either," he declared during his address at a function organized by Jammu and Kashmir Integration and Public Relations. Clearly the minister didn't know what he said. Had he taken into consideration the background under which the sanctioned AIIMS was transferred to Kashmir or had he read the Governor's March 18 address to the join-session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature, he would not have declared what he declared (much against the wishes of his party high command.) The said minister was a party to the address that was read of the Governor and he was very much present there in the Central Hall where the address was read. The address had clearly said that the AIIMS will be set up in Kashmir and Jammu will get IIT and IIM. It is also clear that the decision to transfer the AIIMS to Kashmir was the result of the negotiations between the PDP and the BJP leadership. The minister, it appears, has committed a mistake and he could be taken to task for what he declared in the Women College. The BJP high command is very strict. It doesn't allow anyone in the party to utter a word that has the potential of offending the people of Kashmir. The BJP high command can tolerate anything. It wouldn't mind if somewhat even insults the country, the army and the Indian institutions. But it doesn't take those lightly who question its Kashmir policy. Let's see what finally happens to him. |
