Ram Madhav visiting Jammu today to review situation | BJP is over | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 15: State unit of BJP has been passing through a very critical phase for more than six weeks now. It has become unpopular. People in general and non-BJP political parties, social groups and activists are criticizing it and accusing the BJP of betraying the mandate it got in the last assembly and lok sabha elections. Its ministers, who have failed to come up to the expectations of people of Jammu, and MLAs are also at the receiving end. The view in Jammu is that these BJP ministers and MLAs are "just incompetent" and "they are no match to their Kashmiri counterparts". It is also the view that senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh "has been behaving in a most irresponsible manner and hurting the people of Jammu and the country by making controversial statements which suit the secessionists in Kashmir and Pakistan". To make their point they are referring to his statements on the NHPC power projects and 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments. Nirmal Singh had on March 28 charged New Delhi with using and exploiting the state land and water and accused the Congress and the NC of allowing New Delhi to establish its control over the power projects. He reiterated this view a number of times after March 28 as well. Besides, he had rejected the demand for the adoption of the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments which empower the panchayats and local-self governing institutions saying Jammu and Kashmir enjoys a separate status and those amendments could not adopted. His statements were not consistent with the planks it used to get votes from Jammu and these were consistent with the views of the Kashmiri parties and separatist outfits. Interestingly, the BJP has almost a dozen spokespersons, but they have hardly spoken after the formation of the coalition government in the state. They have stopped holding press conferences and facing the media. During the past 40 days or say, the BJP has not issued a single statement. It has gone totally defensive. Hitherto, the BJP used to hold press conference almost everyday and issue two to three press statements. Sources within the party inform that "some big bosses have directed the spokespersons not to make any statement". These sources also informs that "spokespersons are finding it difficult to counter the anti-BJP campaign that has been going on against it since March 1, as the issues which the critics of the BJP have been raking up on a daily basis are well-conceived and based on hard facts". "We cannot defend our party. BJP leadership has sold out everything for coming into power in the state. The opponents' arguments are strong. We have nothing to defend the party and its performance in the government," sources within the BJP are quoting these spokespersons on the condition of anonymity. The fact is that a sense of guilt, insecurity and frustration has gripped the local BJP leadership, barring perhaps the ministers. It is this and the realization that the "BJP would be over if the morale of the demoralized and censured local leadership was not boosted". BJP national general secretary and one of the architects of the roundly condemned Agenda of Alliance Ram Madhav would be here on Thursday to review the situation as it has developed. However, it is difficult to say that he would be able to undo the wrongs the high command has committed and continue to commit to keep the separatist and communal elements in the Valley in a good humour. After all, Ram Madhav was one person who also created a piquant situation for the local BJP by sealing a power-sharing formula which is being termed here in Jammu as a "complete sell-out" and who has been defending the "bad deal in a most brazen manner". |
