Neither Tara Chand mustered courage, nor seems Dr Singh concerned | Forget about lake, water body like LAWDA still eludes for Jammu | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 16: In the political furore by opposition parties over PDP-BJP's intent to shelve the ambitious artificial lake project in Jammu, most relevant yet always ignored question that can make politicians uncomfortable is that why a Water Development Authority on pattern of LAWDA still eludes for Jammu ? Congress which raked up lake issue vociferously today during years of governance never ever dare ask for it nor seems BJP in a position to assert on what should have been granted to Jammu as a matter of parity . It goes without saying that Jammu has as many lakes and water bodies the condition of which lies in shambles, courtesy successive governments which have always cared and valued the lakes of Kashmir most. Many water bodies of historical and religious significance in and around Jammu have shrunk due to encroachments or stand filled due to neglect of the government. There is no separate department to take care of beautiful and famous lakes like Surinsar, Mansar and many more such water bodies which have remained spots of tourists attraction. While LAWDA was created exclusively for Dal Lake and other water bodies in Kashmir, no party in government, not even those who shared power on the basis of Jammu mandate ever bothered to ask for any such body for preservation of Jammu water bodies which once used to be the pride of the region. Sources within the Congress confided that the party during years of its power sharing first with PDP followed by NC, seldom gave heed to this utter need that would changed the dying face of ponds and lakes in Jammu. Sources further said the then Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand in capacity of Minister of Housing and Urban Development was approached by prominent members of civil society with a memorandum to set up LAWDA like body in Jammu as well. The Minister did show some concern asking the then Commissioner Secretary to prepare a note for presenting in the cabinet meeting, something which never saw day of light until the fall of government after Assembly polls. However, even as the same department is being looked after by present Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, people are not pinning any hope for retrieving pathetic state of water bodies in Jammu for same reasons- No politician from Jammu, no matter what party he belongs to while sharing power with Kashmir centric party can muster courage to ask for this rightful due , notwithstanding the fact thousands of crores of rupees have been pumped into LAWDA through Centre. Who will address this biggest discrimination is the moot question to which no one has the answer….! |
