Will BJP meekly squander Jammu's another mega project? | 51 of 70 cr. spent before Tawi Lake turned unfeasible | | Abodh Sharma Early Times Report JAMMU, May 16: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's hint at abandoning the Tawi Lake project terming it unfeasible has threatened to unlid a can of worms as the statement has raised many a questions on the technical expertise of the engineers who had conducted the surveys before starting such a mega project and the then Minister for PHE and Flood Control Taj Mohiuddin who had been taking credit for the project. There were reports that Taj Mohiuddin had taken up the project with the sole purpose of serving his own vested interests as he had got a palatial farm house constructed in Beli Charana, which was scheduled to get a canal link besides better approach and facelift resulting in the eventual appreciation of the area. Though it is not known whether Chief Minister's statement with regards to unfeasibility of the project is based on any fresh technical assessment, but is it has enough substance to justify abandoning of the entire project, it would also be expected of the current government to fix accountability on the technical experts and the former Minister who was not tired of seeking credit for the prestigious project. "Tawi Lake was projected as a mega venture that would be instrumental in making Jammu an independent tourist destination and many tourism based organizations were demanding its early completion when CM has suddenly come out with this statement, rendering the project unfeasible" said Baldev Raj, an office bearer of traders association. "The project has an emotive dimension as well as it was directly associated with Tawi, which continues to be Jammu's lifeline, both mythologically and realistically. Abandoning such a project when lot of work has been done on it would be colossal wastage of public money and lot of deliberations need to be given before calling it off" said a former Chief Engineer pleading not to be named. The mega project has missed several deadlines. All the gated structures of the Tawi lake are almost ready on both sides and hardly 5 % civil works are left. Nearly, Rs 51 crore have been spent on this Rs 70 cr project by the agency so far. Meanwhile, the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh along with the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed when the latter was making a statement to this affect and his stoic silence over the issue is also being seen as BJP's meek surrender on issues vital to interests of Jammu region. The apprehensions have been aggravated by the response of central leadership of the BJP as Union minister Uma Bharti has intervened in the matter, vouching for the project and promising central help if required |
